Think about how Tibetan monks can shut off their inner chatter quickly and with ease. How SEAL snipers tune their brainwaves to an alpha frequency before locking on to targets. Or how extreme athletes smooth out their heart rhythms right before dropping into something death defying.
To do this they have learnt how to get beyond the storytelling of their egos, and into a place where they can turn and tune the knobs and levers of their neurobiology. They have found a way to liberate themselves from the limitations of their monkey minds. In doing so, they are able to tackle big challenges from a state of Flow, rather than a state of fight/flight, freeze/faint. And tackling challenges from a state of Flow is what can make the impossible possible.
Liberation from our monkey minds is quite a skill. Useful in all moments of life (not just the more extreme cases described above). It’s a skill however that relies on one key factor - the ability to diagnose yourself in action. The ability to diagnose yourself in the moment. It’s a skill that enables you to meet the challenges of life from up on on the balcony, rather than down on the dance floor.
When we’re up on the balcony, we get a better view of what is really happening. We have access to better information. We can make better choices. If we are up on the balcony we are more likely to take that walk, do that 15 minute meditation, breathe some deep breaths or strike that power pose. We are more likely to make choices that modulate our neurobiology to change our state, and therefore change our experience of the challenge at hand. And changing our experience of challenges is what makes the difference between surviving and thriving.
Over time, this wondrous reframing skill can become second nature. A muscle memory response to the ever-changing challenges of life. But until it becomes our default, we need to consciously practice it. We need to consciously strengthen the new neural path-ways that enable it.
One way to practice and strengthen is by using Quantum Koans. [More in comments]
