Opened in 1932, this sanitarium treated people with mental disorders, drug addiction and alcoholism. The founding father of the institution was a major proponent of eugenics, and helped sterilize many of the 8,000 people in VA deemed "unfit" to have children due to their genetics. Just about all of these involuntarily sterilized people were African or Native Americans, "insane," "feeble minded," or poor. Over 60,000 Americans were sterilized until the atrocities of the holocaust were publicized, leading to the downfall of the eugenics movement in the US; however the director of the hospital clung to this philosophy for most of his life.
This cheerful looking facility was last used as a psychiatric treatment center for adolescents before closing in 1996.
