In 1953 Gloria and Abraham Wilson wrote a letter to Frank Lloyd Wright to commission a home. Gloria’s brother, Marvin, was one of Wright’s apprentice and the couple hoped using The connection might secure them the commission.
Their home designed on Usonian model was built in 1954 on a site near mill river in New Jersey. The word “ Usonian” was derived from abbreviation of “ United States Of North America” FLW embraces this term as the name for distinct American & Democratic architecture for homes that he developed during the depression. In Usonian homes, the side that faces the street offers few windows given privacy to inhabitants. The back side would be walls of glass, inviting the surrounding landscape and nature into the home.
In 1988, design and architect team of Lawrence & Sha on Tarantino bought the house with the hope of restoring it to its glory days. Yet the flood from the riverside had kept the damage on the house. One Sunday morning in 2013, Tarantino’s saw a program on CBS about Crystal Bridges with Alice Walton (Walmart) and started contacting the Museum in the hope of finding a safe ground for the house. Crystal Bridges bought the house and started a detail plan for the move. The entire structure was taken apart, packed, labeled and loaded into two tractor trailers and traveled 1,235 miles to N.Arkansas....and the Wilson house arrived in CB in 2014. The team at Crystal Bridges had the original plans from FLW and started re-construction and put the house together piece by piece. Finally after two years the home was completed and a piece of Frank Lloyd Wright’s emerged out of the forest and resided in North of Arkansas in 2017. #franklloydwright #midcenturymodern #midcentury #architecture #photooftheday #traveljournal #love #midcenturyarchitecture #usonian #usonianhouse #crystalbridges #bentonville #arkansas #waltonfamily #waltonfamilyfoundation #cbs #alicewalton #crystalbridgesmuseum #northarkansas #rarefind #outofnowhere #inhabitants #oneofakind #architectural #significant #bachmanwilsonhouse
