Don't you just LOVE when you buy a random book and it turns out to be really good!? I recently bought this book, and the next three in the series, for about $2 each. I liked the artwork and figured we could always donate them if we didn't enjoy them.
We are halfway through the first book - they're about 110 pages long - and already we are loving it! And the discussion topics it has already brought up are great! We've discussed friendships and whether you need to live close to someone and see them regularly to be able to call yourself friends (we concluded that friendships come in all forms and you can have friendships where you have never even met in person!), whether it's okay for parents to make kids move to a new place if the kid doesn't want to, about the difference between seeing a situation as a sacrifice or an opportunity, how you can feel excited and scared at the same time... And the story has included several scientific explanations about things like gravity and molecules. It's all done within the story's dialogue.
I'm really impressed with this book from a growth mindset perspective as well!
The main character is a girl named Starr who, along with her mum, dad, and two brothers, move to space to be the first family to live on a space station.
It's definitely in the realm of Zoey and Sassafras for it's quality storytelling and fun blend of science and fantasy.
