We’re back! Mrs. Tone and I had a lovely wedding and honeymoon, but it’s back to reality for both of us. And reality has set in on Tuesday and that means it’s #tonetiptuesday
Today’s tone tip Tuesday is all about output. There’s a good saying that goes, “less is more.” This is true for how hot you want your #humbuckers
. I see a lot of companies out there offering “vintage-voiced” #PAF
pickups, but with output ratings of 10k and up. That’s too hot!
You’re preferred output resistance is going to vary a bit depending on your amp, your pedals, and your preferences, but I like to think that a ‘bucker between 7-9k is the sweet spot. This gives you a great balance between bite and clarity, without any frequency being too pronounced. Overwound humbuckers tend to be too shrill or too mid-heavy. I even have a guitar with a neck that reads 6.5k!
Remember: it’s always easy to add a little volume or gain, but when you START with too much, it’s hard to take it away.
