Argentina - Day 8
Another night of great sleep, I’m on a roll. And I’ve learned to put the buff over my mouth while I slept to reduce night time loud coughing. Wake up time was 5.45am. I packed my things and went to a cooked hot breakfast at 6.30am. Again a dream to have hot food made for me by the local cook. Food was basic, but HOT! BTW, I finally figured out how to use my -30F sleeping bag, it is most clothes off. I tried wearing my ultra light down jacket first and it took forever to warm a just a little bit. Once I took the down off, with the next 30 mins, it started getting really toasty. Back to day 8. I started feeling better than day 7. And it seemed like I was back to Utah health. It was an 8 hour trek to the base camp, gaining 3,300 ft approx. Since I felt good, for the 3rd time since I met my guide, I didn’t listen to his advice to go slow. I just marched ahead at probably 3 miles per hour. Walking ahead of German guy and the guide most of the time and I just wait for them every once in a while. By the 4 hour, my energy completely died, like massively, the rest of the trek, was SO HARD, towards the end I was probably moving at 1/3 of a mile per hour. My heart was beating so hard from the 4th hour on. I was breathing so hard too. I guess I wasn’t as fit as I had hoped. The thing is, the distance and the elevation gain today, I’ve done them several times in the US, and 3/4 times have been perfectly fine, Mt Rainier was the exception. So I totally didn’t expect to hurt so bad. When I got to Basecamp at 7hour 10 mins, I was so dead. I went into our food tent and just collapsed on the floor for the next couple of hours. My heart beat was measure at 123 even after an hour of doing nothing, and my blood oxygen level was 91, which was good.
