At Bungalora Farm we have one foot in and one foot out. Stepping into the farming world has taught us more than probably any other thing we have done, as individuals, as a couple and as a family.
Our other foot remains planted firmly in what we still call the “real world”. Our lives here are largely unchanged. We still work full time, we still have kids school & sport commitments.
We frequently get asked “how do we do it” especially with things like finding our animals dead, or missing, as well as questions about how the kids are with everything.
And no, it’s not easy but it is worth it. We check in with the kids frequently to make sure they are happy with what we are doing. Thankfully they love it here. The good outweighs the bad.
It’s not for everyone but we love our crazy life!
Excited to be back in what for me is sunny California after a long time on the road. The Californians call this time of year “June gloom” and say it’s cold and “bad weather” but for a Norwegian this is almost an offense 😂 I am excited to soak up some longed for vitamin D and to get my hands in the soil. I love connecting with all the plants and the micro organisms living and thriving in this garden and I feel blessed to have this place to nurture and care for. In the background under the umbrella we have a composting area and under all the trees we have added comfrey and flowers to create a dynamic eco system that works together. I love learning and deepening my passion for #permaculture
& implementing / experimenting with these principles 🌱🙏🏻🥑 We have avocados coming in hot right now and that is just a dream come true... #bprsnt #gardenday #gardening #permaculturedesign #permaculturegarden #permaculturelife #farm #plant #grow #outside #happy #salutethesun #garden #compost #california #caligirl #gardenlife #PRSNT
So happy I still have some flowers around for the bees 🐝 I have been planting heaps of flower seeds everywhere because I’m using so much more for my cooking and I want to make sure there’s plenty for the bees 🐝 🌸✨💖🌱
Love my little veggie field
Il raccolto di oggi. Today’s harvest..
This is how I feel when I visit a nursery 😂 These plants talk to me and I know they wanna go with me. I literally want to buy all if I can 🥰 #permaculturecostarica #plantlover
Syntropic farming demo and practical 🌱

So while we're being teased with warnings of heatwaves everywhere else in Europe, Devon still appears determined to skip summer this year 😒 At least it's pudding & books kind of weather and we're addicted to both. No guilt on desserts as sugar free anyway (can't use dairy much either other than butter which I tolerate & love) ; this was rhubarb & raspberry clafouti, a big family favourite 😋 And with books we just compensate our addiction by building more shelves... Still whenever I tidy up (rarely!) & round up all the farm & permaculture books scattered around the house because they are either being read or referred to, recently shared or discussed, there's a fair pile. These are the current drifters. And to anyone who's managed to Kondo their lives well done to you (no sarcasm, finding it genuinely impressive!) and yes, books do spark joy for us as well as our brain synapses, big time 🤓 Must be contagious as my daughter said that books & woodlands were her favourite smells 😊 (and thanks Jason @wordsandpicturesteignmouth
for the lovely punctuation insect, it's gone to guard the graphic novels section of the bookshelves for now 😁)

Latest Permaculture Design <3 .
Suburban property, a family of 4 wanting to improve their connection to nature and their food and medicine, without it being to overwhelming to start. .
My job as a designer is to marry the land with the client context, consider the surrounding ecology, ensure the implementation will be easy to carry out for the clients and that the maintenance needs for their lifestyle.
Slowly... we will co create a more connected and resilient world, with the consideration of our relationship with and as nature. .
The design is complete with sector analysis, zone map, concept design, final design, planting plan and 36 page management plan to go with it! .
Think I am happy with refining my watercolour design style, dusty colours of sunset... mmmm! .

Accompanied these beautiful kids as they tried to plant a seed of an apple tree. Keyword is tried - and failed haha 🍎
Truth be told, they don't know how to plant a seed properly yet but they just are so full of enthusiasm that they just want to plant the seed directly into the ground asap with no planting protocol haha. 😅
I tried to teach them, but they didn't have the openness yet to listen to the proper and due process of nursing a seed in a small pot with the right composting mix in a nursery. They just wanted to act and get things done. 🙂
I grinned and shook my head as they are like little warriors rushing into battle without a plan. The funniest thing is they filled the plastic bucket we were supposed to plant the seed in but forgot where they put the apple seed. 😂
Our experience wasn't actually a failure. It was a learning experience, because in life you can only succeed or learn. So now, they are learning the hard way. Perhaps kids really do have to begin that way. Hey, we were all kids once so it is the way things are. We also still are kids deep inside too, as we keep learning in the infinite multiversity of life. 🧒
Our educational system ingrained in us the fear of making mistakes, but when we uproot that fear - we realize that making mistakes is how we learn. We just need to make sure we absorb the lesson in those mistakes, so we don't make them again. But to fear making mistakes creates a violent spin-cycle of self-critical perfectionism where we don't learn anything but how wrong we are and how wrong everything is. 😥
So we need to learn how to relax again. When the kids made those mistakes, I didn't chastise or get angry with them. I trusted their intelligence, simply clarified with them their mistakes with a laughing smile and told them how to do it better next time. Then I am patient for them to learn in their own time. 🙏
Real education is planting a seed and creating the best conditions for that seed to grow. When that seed grows is not up to you anymore. Let's plant seeds in our children, give them the best conditions we can and let them grow and sprout in their own time. 🌱
Did you plant a seed today? 💚
Our chicken coop is looking lovely with all this greenery around. 🐓🌿
As you know we are trying to make a food forest based on permaculture but the motivation here for us is that it is organic 👏 So let me share with you some friends who loves organic food without pesticides, herbacides and fertilizers. You clearly see in the pictures that they loved it. I hope we can make our dream true of having a food forest so we can share with them too. #permaculturecostarica #urbanpermaculture #organicfarming
Ready... Steady... Go 🍍☕️ @bluebayantigua
's mostly homemade❣️ breakfast with view 🍳🏝 why is it so special? We select ingredients, go for local and seasonal fruits, bake our own sourdough bread and marmalade 🇮🇹 we do celebrate our italian origins offering a genuine product, granny approved ☕️ and, of course, "a damn good coffee" Cit.
Premier tournesol, première courgette et premier potiron pour cette nouvelle aventure en permaculture 👨🌾 Beaucoup de déceptions qui nourrissent l’expérience, beaucoup de travail, de la patience et de la joie pour ces premières fois 😍
First sunflower, first zucchini and first pumpkin for this new adventure in permaculture 👨🌾 Many disappointments that feed experience, lot of work, patience and a lot of happiness when you see your first little success 😍🙏🏼🙌🏻
African Blue Basil!!
This is a relatively new basil hybrid discovered in the 80s, and its a PERENNIAL! .
This is new to me this year, (thanks @suzannayellow
for sharing about yours, I didnt know this existed!!)
It doesnt produce seeds, and can only be reproduced through stem cuttings, but boy do these cuttings root well! .
They produce beautiful bushy plants with gorgeous flowers that pollinators love. And, the plant is edible like other basils with incredible camphor smells. (Mmm, pesto!?!?)
I havent overwintered this plant yet, and will likely bring it in for the winter. From what I read, some people bring it in and others ake cuttings to grow over the winter instead of the whole plant. .
Ill have some small starts out on the plant stand next week, or send me a message if youd like one put aside. ($2 or trades)
Who else has been growing this? Anything I need to know? Favorite basil recipes?

there’s tremendous energy in the determined, intensive labour of parenting, of providing food, educating in skills and maintaining awareness of safety while engaging with the world. the drive to find good food and water, to seek shelter, which is in mama hen’s feathers if you are a chick, and then to rest, maybe in the sunshine, maybe in a dustbath—it is how we’ve all survived thus far, the foundation of everything else. .
and yet, in the labours that are accounted for in the culture i know, they are dismissed as secondary. it will be very difficult to change how we treat the earth as long as we follow this paradigm. we cannot have it both ways. either we see that we are nature, that we thrive in the patterns of nature, of interconnectedness and we act now to shift any methods of living that do not align with sustaining life, or we go on seeing ourselves as separate and accept that we will none of us go on as we are. it comes down to vision, and we need it now. i think pepper hen has her priorities clear, and she makes me look closely at mine.
given our ecological emergency, how are you changing the way you see, the way you live, to integrate with the priorities of nature? i’ll go first, in the comments.
*some of our experiments will be on display in a month’s time, along with many other homes and gardens on the salt spring eco living tour. send me a note if you’re local and would like tickets.*
Building a house in the tropics?? 🔨
We have over 15 years of experience in designing and building natural, sustainable structures in the tropics. In this time we have tried many different styles, building materials, and designs. We have gotten to see what works well and what doesn't. Our many years of experience has brought us to a point of understanding what designs, in our opinion, are the best for building a natural and sustainable home in the tropics.
We would like to share our thoughts with you. Our last blog, Design Ideas for a Sustainable Home in the Tropics, can be found in the link on our bio. Please visit this or our website to find ideas and inspiration to begin building your tropical home. Or join us in February 2020 for our annual Natural Building Intensive. Students will get hands on experience and theory in natural building and plasters. These skills are not limited to building in the tropics. All info on this workshop and others can be found on our website 🙌 Happy building 😊 #naturalbuildingworkshop #naturalhomes #naturalbuilding #naturalplasters #sustainablebuilding
Plenty plenty plenty of rice babies leftover on the bed, waiting for any rice farmer friends to come get them if theirs are all wilted (some villagers already approached us to take these for their rice planting because theirs are all dead 💀 due to no water 💦). Or, blend them into nice healthy fresh chlorophyll juice smoothies! I saw research that rice grass can be as healthy as wheat grass! #superfood
!!Any other idea 💡 for how to use these rice sprout?
She had fun😊 we were polishing our guest House camper and she was having bliss jumping in the "bedroom"😊 I just finished editing a new video (will be on youtube at 7 pm - link in bio) where you ll see the footage and also peeks into the event we went to over the weekend-Sekier meadow feast❤ It was raw and beautiful, I didnt want to film very much but I had to capture the essence of it at least a little bit, you ll see more tonight. Untill then last week's video is in the link-have a Nice day😊❤🙆 Totálne si to užívala 😊 My sme majstrovali na hosťovskom karavane a Mia blbla v "spálni".
Some quick vids showing what we've been up to over autumn and the start of winter. The food forest is planted out with trees so we will be putting more berries and annuals in there come spring time. #permaculture #organicgardening #homesteading
Putting in new beds in preparation for spring. The soil is very sandy here so I'm flipping the sod under, then topping with a thick layer of decent compost. Once the weeds emerge I will flame them and then plant straight into the compost, mulching around the seedlings. The plan is to grow 3 times as much as last year and sell at the markets in #newnorfolk
. Easy peasy. #permaculture #organicgardening

Welcome to join us!
I choose to be present while venturing forth. Confront the experience of the great unknown and share my wisdom with others who encounter shifting tides of their reality. I identify myself to myself, I dare to stand alone in the light of my inner truth firmly and watch quietly. As rules are redefining themselves in the moment, I am aware of the flow of the energies around me and ride the direction of the current to merge with the moment. Presence & Openness
