Do we have to implement opt-in to be GDPR compliant?
No, #GDPR requires a lot of measures, but seldom is specific in how exactly they should be reached. The #consent must be proven. Simply, no one should be able e.g. to put random #email addresses into your database (or you shouldn't be able to claim that it happened). #personaldata#database#compliance

As well as all my client work, I’ve been busy this week working on my own email marketing. I’ve nearly completed my first free download (I know as someone in the digital marketing game I’m well behind on doing this for myself - isn’t that always the way?!). The next step is to set everything set up and ready to go! But, with May 25th and the GDPR approaching, I want to make sure everything is compliant now rather than having to switch things up later an create extra work for myself. So, if you are in a similar position - here’s what I understand about GDPR and email marketing so far...
1. Make sure your options are positive. No more “uncheck here if you don’t want to receive xyz” thank you very much!
2. Be specific about what you are going to send and obtain separate consent for each. If you use Mailchimp they will be introducing GDPR compliant forms in early April and *hopefully* they will make this bit clear and easy.
3. Go for double opt-in. Okay so this isn’t stated as compulsory but I think it’s the only way you can truly show an individual has genuinely consented to receive your emails.
4. If you already have an email list and it’s not quite kosher you’ll need to ask everyone in your list to re-consent. Consider a re-engagement campaign over the coming months so that when you ask those on your list to re-consent they will be scrambling to do so because they know they just can’t live without your awesome updates!
