Travelling books ✈️ today I finished #circe
in Ghent old town Belgium 🇧🇪 Circe🔥🌞by Madeline Miller
Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Brief thoughts: beautifully written novel based around Greek mythology, namely the daughter of Helios- Circe. It’s a fantasy without being a in-your-face magic and world building and crazy shit kind of fantasy
More detailed: So where do I start with Circe, other than to say it was fantastic. I was hesitant about reading this book despite all the rave reviews. I just never heard the words “Greek mythology” and jumped out of my skin with excitement. However I decided I would take the plunge and try my luck. I mean the cover alone was reason enough to buy it 😍. So without going into plot spoilers etc, this book is about the daughter of Helios- Circe, and follows her life for many many years narrating her horrible upbringing and years of abuse from her siblings and parents. As the story goes on Circe takes lovers and discovers her own powers. I expected this book to be jam packed with action and fantasy and crazy mystical stuff, and on reflection it did indeed have a lot of that! But the bones and beauty of this novel is that the story focuses on the character and her evolution throughout the years, not the mystical world she lives in. Despite being a goddess we see that even the gods have the same sadness and cruelty as mankind and I couldn’t help but cheer Circe on throughout as she went from strength to strength. This is a fantastically written novel, trying to describe it is so hard because it doesn’t really follow a simple plot. I suppose if I had to pinpoint it, it follows how Circe comes into her true self and the events that aided this. It is 100% worth the read, so well written, interesting and gripping in ways I don’t know how to articulate. Plus one of the girls on tour with me is reading it now and also loving it! Big thumbs up! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#bookstagram #bookworm #bookphotography #biblophile #booklover #bookaddict #instareads #book #reader #bookish #bookgram #beautifulbooks #reading #booktag #coverlove #perthisok
