Staying creative is hard. .
There’s always something to worry about in the creative industries. We stare at our IG feed and wonder why we can’t shoot like our heroes. .
Exasperated, we ask ourselves how they can be so creative. We wonder what the magic sauce is and which shop to buy it in. .
We buy new cameras in the hope that it inspires us to shoot differently. We buy books that swear to tell us the secrets to boosting our creativity. We search our souls and wonder why it seems like everyone else’s work is better than ours. .
But really, when it comes to creativity, there’s only one answer. .
And the answer is you. .
You are holding yourself back. .
Back when we were kids, we looked at things differently. We experimented more, we took risks. .
In wedding photography, we err on the side of caution constantly.. going for the safe shot, nailing the shot that everyone else and their dog has. But now everyone has a good camera so how do you get your work to stand out in a sea of mediocrity?
Shooting creatively in whatever style you love, is the key. .
Finding ten minutes in a hectic wedding day to shoot something you love, will inspire you to shoot even more stuff you love… it will fire you up to try shooting something interesting or get you excited to take more risks. Not everything will work, sometimes you will fall on your arse but sometimes you will win. .
And the more times you take creative risks, the happier you will be. .
Your risky shots might not float everyone’s boat, but that’s ok. Art is subjective. .
So take more risks. .
Experiment more. .
Find the angle no-one else is shooting from. .
Embrace the strange and unconventional.
Love what you do. .
