Hi everyone! I’m @nadege_mazars
and I’m happy to show you some pictures I took during the peace process in Colombia. It’s part of my long term project The Other Colombia, trying to figure the attempt of building peace in the country. I’m based in Bogotá, Colombia, and working in Latin America.
December 6, 2016. Yari Llanos. The FARC-EP Commander Carlos Antonio Lozada, member of the high command of the guerrilla, is sitting on a "caleta”, the place where a guerrillero usually sleeped. Carlos Antonio Lozada was one of the negotiator in La Habana, Cuba, during the peace process. In 2018, Lozada, now called by his civil name Julían Gallo, became Senator. As a guarantee of the reincorporation in the civil political life, the peace deal included the insurance of 10 seats in the Colombian congress. In September 2017, the guerrilla converted to a political party named FARC for Revolutionary Alternative Common Force.
The portrait was taken on assignment for @newyorkermag.
The series tries to figure the transition from the shadows to the light of the guerrilleros after a 53 years old-war. Completed between September 2016 and February 2017, iIt seizes the moment of the turning point of their passage to a civil life while their singularities were subdued behind a stringent military discipline during years in an army.
In 2016, the war ended between the Colombian state and the FARC guerrilla. The insurgent army of 8,000 fighters finished the laying down of weapon in June 2017 and began their reincorporation to civil life.
