YESTERDAY I ran all over Rome to see EVERY SINGLE attraction that Rome has to offer. (If you’ve ever been to Rome then you know that the attractions are not clustered together conveniently). 🏃🏻‍♀️ I did everything on foot in a 5.5 hour time limit during one of the most crowded times to see Rome. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Over 10 miles walking, correction, basically running to get everything in before I had to catch my train. I DID IT!!! After catching a train back to Civitavecchia, I performed two ice shows and can admit I was exhausted. My point here is not every workout needs to be spent in the gym. If you’re living your life and being physically active some days then by all means PROCEED! Hey everyone, remember me? I haven’t been much of an inspiration lately because life is crazy hectic. . Most of you know that I work with the Royal St. John's Regatta and you also know that we’re celebrating a significant milestone (200 years baby!). With a significant milestone comes a significant increase in workload and a significant decrease in “me” time. I don’t mind because I truly love my job and I just want to do my part to make this an awesome year for all of our visitors and athletes but, I AM looking forward to the little lull after the big day. . BUT...that’s not why I popped in. . My partner and I bought bikes at the beginning of the summer. I love it — even though I sometimes feel like I’m going to meet my maker on the top of each hill we ride up, but, I keep on trucking along. . However, do you know what has been going through my mind EVERY time I’m out on my bike? I fixate on the thought that everyone is staring...not in a “oh that looks like fun, I feel inspired to go get a bike and ride it around” but in a “look at that fat-bottomed girl on a bicycle” sort of way. . WHY couldn’t I be proud that bike riding is something I would NEVER be able to do at over 500lbs? . WHY couldn’t I focus on the endorphins running through my body during this incredible heart-pumping workout? . WHY couldn’t I just enjoy the precious time I’m spending with my family during our bike rides? . WHY couldn’t I just get out of my own head? . So, tonight I left work at a decent time to come home and hang out with the fam, which included a bike ride. . I gave myself a little pep talk, a kick in the butt and decided that I wasn’t going to let my mind take over. I’ve come a very long way and accomplished a lot on my journey. If people want to laugh at me because I jiggle when I peddle and have more butt than seat, so be it. Maybe, just maybe, there’s someone out there looking at me and thinking “hey, that girl is out riding her bike, I think I am going to start doing the same”. . 🍫 Zinc and adolescent health🐟 Zinc (ZN) is a trace mineral that helps support immunity, wound healing, skeletal development and behaviour (now we can see why it’s important during adolescence). Boys and girls between 14-18 require 11 & 9 mg/day respectively. Zinc intake is known to be fairly low in adolescent populations and when considering the above benefits, it’s clear to see why this needs addressing. We must also consider the link between physical activity (PA) and zinc status. Serum Zinc concentrations have been shown to increase post exercise. Seemingly due to zinc movement from the skeletal muscle into plasma pursuant to proteilysis from the exercise stressor. For those working with particularly active youth or young athletes, we must also consider that some research suggests chronic exercise may negatively impact zinc levels. Taking into consideration all of the above, it’s clear to see the importance of getting this right. It’s the weekend, get up and get moving! Did you know almost 70 per cent of Australian adults can be classed as either sedentary or having low levels of physical activity? On average we sit for 9 hours per day (not including the hours spent laying down in bed sleeping). These stats sound surprising but when we think about it, the majority of us spend our days in the car, on the couch or at our computer. Prolonged sitting is associated with a range of health problems including musculoskeletal disorders. cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anxiety, depression, the list goes on....Research tells us that even if we go to the gym for an hour each day, if the rest of the day is spent sitting, that hour at the gym may not be enough to protect us from the risks. I was so shocked when I first put on a fit bit and realised that on days I sat at my desk I only did around 2000-3000 steps! C • A • R • D • I • O - A huge topic of discussion within the fitness industry, and competing especially. It seems like there is this pre-conceived notion that to be a bikini competitor you have to do 2 hours of cardio every day and eat lettuce. UMM NO THANK YOU 🙅🏻‍♀️ Idk where this idea came from, but it is FAR from true. - Cardio is a TOOL. Honestly, you could do an entire prep without actually doing any cardio, but, you would probably be having to eat lettuce 😂 lmaoooo. The point of cardio is to help put your body into a caloric deficit - aka burning more calories than you are taking in throughout the day. Since you take in calories through food, you can use cardio in a way to be able to eat more food. They work interchangeably, so basically more cardio = more food, less cardio = less food. You can play around with it and choose what works best for you and your lifestyle! - Lately I have been literally enjoying every cardio session and actually looking forward to it!! I am currently 7 days out and looking forward to cardio.... WHO EVEN AM I?! 😅 Well, it’s because I have found ways to truly ENJOY IT. Instead of getting on a machine, watching the clock go by second by second, I have been taking my cardio sessions outside! I have been loving the Santa Monica stairs, the Culver City Stairs, beach sprints, and walks outside! I am blessed to live in such a beautiful place that offers these great alternatives for being active. 💪🏼 - Find some cool places near you that you can go to get a good sweat sesh in! 💦 Even just a high school football field is a great option! I guarantee you will never look at cardio the same again! 😎 There are no rules that say you have to restrict yourself to cardio machines at the gym - cuz who ACTUALLY likes those?! Fitness is meant to be fun & enjoyable, so make it that way! 🤗

SHOULD HAVE BEEN Couch to 5K, W4/D3. Stretching, warmup walk, new record longest stretch of straight running yet at 3.25km — from Struve tn to Ujula at Puiestee, up the hill through the Kalmistu sandstone outcrop. Other than warmup and cooldown walks, stopped exactly twice, both for short distances. Total of 4.53(!!!!)km of running. 5.7km. . If I had run this route in reverse, I may have been able to go even farther without stopping; I only slowed to a walk after that 3.25km because after running that long at an even pace, short as it was, that sudden steep uphill through the outcrop on a gravel/sandy road destroyed me. . That being said, I am really pleased with today's run, especially considering I had taken a week off. Not that I was planning to, but I listened to my body and decided to give my hurting leg a break. Today I listened to my body again — and to the triathletes who ran and cycled past outside our window all day — and decided it was time to lace up again. Felt extra motivated when 1. I ran along and then cut through the triathlon track, 2. I ended up cutting through runners participating in a shorter race in Ülejõe Park and 3. I ran past a 'How are you feeling?' tag spray-painted on the bike/run trail somewhere near the Emajõe Community Garden. Also motivated by Seinabo Sey shuffle on Spotify, i.e. empowering R&B/soul/pop/whatever by a Swedish woman of color. The final cherry on top? My leg doesn't even hurt anymore. . 5k is within my grasp. This is me about to head off on an 11km hike through the rainforest. I love this kind of physical activity. It doesn’t feel like a chore like the kind that you set your alarm for at 5am. On purpose exercise has always been a struggle for me, the closest I get is taking my dog for a walk but at least I am getting 20-30 minutes most mornings right? But as far as high intensity cardio goes I always put it as a last priority even though when I do do it I feel amazing. Can anyone else relate?
