👟HIGH VS LOW ANKLE SPRAINS! - Ep.158 [Info] . There’s a big soccer game ⚽️ in Toronto today, and inevitably there will be ankle sprains 💥. THE most common sports injury period. Many of you have probably heard of the terms 🔻‘Low’ vs 🔺‘High’ ankle sprains as categories of these injuries. But what’s the difference?? These terms distinguish which part of the anatomy (higher or lower) the injury occurs: . 🔵Low Ankle Sprain - a lot of us know about these. Usually occurs from the foot plantar-flexing ⤵️and inverting ↩️. Happens a lot in sports like soccer, basketball and football where the footwear is less stable. Generally these have shorter recovery times. The injured tissue is usually: 🔻Anterior Talo-Fibular Ligament 🔻Calcaneo-Fibular Ligament 🔻Posterior Talo-Fibular Ligament . 🔴High Sprain - these are less known, but usually take much longer to heal (6-8 weeks usually). Occurs from the foot being dorsiflexed, then being driven into External rotation ↪️. Sports where you have the foot locked in position with a boot (skiing or hockey) get these more. There is more damage to the tissue holding the tibia and fibula together. The injured tissue is usually: 🔻Interosseous Membrane 🔻AITF and PITF Ligaments . ➡️The way you treat and rehab these injuries are a little different because of the mechanism. Hundreds 💯 (+leg lifts) One of the more common Pilates exercises used, but also one of the harder matwork exercises. So you need to choose whontonuse this with wisely. When finding it hard to control lumbopelvic posture as the legs lower, use a wedge to block anterior tilt to: ⬇️ extension load on the spine ⬇️ anterior load on the hip ✔️ still train at a high intensity I use this with most patients as a starting point and especially those with mobile lumbar lordosis. Don't let the idea of using the wedge fool you - it's still a tough one. Then roll the towel up and secure it with the rubber band. -- 1️⃣ Find your upper traps 2️⃣ Place the "towel" on your upper traps with your hand 3️⃣ Using a corner wall make sure you drive yourself directly into the wall applying all the pressure on your trap 4️⃣ If you feel sensation anywhere besides your trap, you probably found a trigger point that's referring pain to another part of your body. That's the one! 5️⃣ Hang out there and allot the tissue to break down - - WHAT YOU MIGHT FEEL? It's common to feel a dull ache feeling when you apply pressure into your trap. The achey/dull sensation may travel to your head or eye area while you apply pressure into the wall. Don’t be alarmed, it’s a trigger point referral pain. Injury prevention! _ You all ever here of your rotator cuff? _ If not that’s okay, that why I’m here. Your rotator cuff is a group of muscles around your shoulder. It’s responsible for the majority of the stability of your shoulder. _ The shoulder is inherently an unstable joint. It’s referred to as a ball and socket joint. But it’s more like a plate and baseball attached by small ligaments. Without our rotator cuffs we would all be like those kids on the A train 🚊 doing circus tricks with their bodies (very NYC reference). _ 🎥: try this drill before heavy upper body lifting and save your shoulders from injury! Plantar Fasciitis🦍 . Great post by @strengthcoachtherapy ❗️ — Tag someone that can benefit from this post! . 📝One of the hallmark signs of plantar fasciitis is foot pain first thing in the morning that can be relieved by stretching your calves. If that’s you, here is a sequence of exercises you can use. . 🤓One interesting thing with the plantar fascia is there's very little if any inflammatory component to this pain. Thus making the name fasciitis incorrect. Forget everything you've been taught, basically. Because science. . 🎙In this approach stretch the calves and plantar fascia and then strengthen to improve tissue resiliency. If you're in a more acute stage this could honestly make things worse. ‼️Ankle Mobility Series Part 1: Self Myofascial Release ‼️ 🏀 🔑80% of foot problems are due to calf inflexibility Poor dorsiflexion leads: 👉🏻Changes in gait mechanics. 👉🏻Improper dorsiflexion loads the Achilles' tendon leading to tendonitis/tendinopathy 👉🏻Causes Compensation w/midfoot collapse leading to plantar fascia pain and flat foot 👉🏻Increased Medial border loading leading to bunion formation 👉🏻Excessive pronation leading to posterior tibialis dysfunction 🏀 Tightness in the gastroc/soleus complex will lead to decreased dorsiflexion therefore we will show you way how to decrease the tightness via self myofascial release. 🏀 1️⃣Place a LAX ball on your calf and roll up/down/side to side the entire calf muscle. Increase the pressure by placing your other foot on top of your calf to penetrate deeper into the muscle. Roll around until you find a tender spot and perform trigger point release by sustaining the pressure on the tender spot while pointing your foot up/down. Perform for 1 min x 2. If this method is too aggressive, use a foam roller as described below. 🏀 2️⃣Use a foam roller to roll your entire calf muscle. Increase the pressure by placing your other foot on top. If there is a portion of the calf that you feel a knot, then sustain the pressure for 20 seconds to decrease the tightness. Episode 39 - How to release your Piriformis . Some days can be a really pain in the ass 🍑. I’m not meaning it metaphorical, more so literally. This pain in the ass can also be another reason why you experience low back pain 🌋. There is a prevalence of overworked/tight piriformis in 17.2% of individuals with low back pain (1). One of the things we can do to loosen this muscle 💪 is to release it with an object (foam roller, tennis ball, etc). There is evidence to show that using a foam roller for self-myofascial release to improve joint range of motion, muscle recovery, and performance (2). . The piriformis is a pear 🍐 shaped muscle that’s located right inside your butt 🍑. It’s attached between your sacrum and your greater trochanter (bony side of your thigh). It’s main action with 6 other muscles is to externally rotate the thigh. One of the reasons why you might have pain in the piriformis is due to the sciatic nerve that passes through it. The sciatic nerve can pass under the piriformis, pass over it, and pass through it (3). If the piriformis starts to irritate the sciatic nerve, then people will start to experience pain in the glute region, which can then be refer up to the spine. . Steps to release your piriformis 1️⃣ - Place a foam roller on the side you want releasing (e.g. on left gluteal region) 2️⃣ - Cross your left leg over onto the right leg to create a figure 4 3️⃣ - Rotate your torso to the side being released with your right arm over your left leg and use your left arm for stability 4️⃣ - Gently roll back and forth slowly along the gluteal region for 10-15 times 5️⃣ - If you come across a tender spot, hold onto that area between 30-90 seconds, or until the tenderness subsided. . There are other ways of reducing pain in the piriformis. Stretching can help relieve pain in the gluteal region (see Episode 18 - Powerful Static Stretches for Your Glutes), as will massage 💆‍♀️, and exercises 🏋️‍♂️. Foam rolling has a lot of benefits. The lens we usually look at knee rehab/control from is stopping movement in any plane outside of straight alignment. The other lens is, taking the knee out of alignment and training the knee joint to control and strengthen side to side movement when they do happen, and they will😒. . These two drills will work to increase control of the knee when your pelvis/torso is rotated towards the left and towards the right. Different muscles turn on to protect your knee based what direction the rest of your body is moving in. . Whether you’re working out🏋🏽‍♂️, running🏃🏾‍♂️or playing sports⛹🏻‍♀️ your knee will go different ways and training your body to control all these different planes is crucial to knee health and recovery . .
