I got a bit of backlash from my post last night about how I’m spreading fear about sleeping a certain way and I apologize if I scared you in any way. 🙏🏼My goal with these sleeping posts are to make you more aware of how you sleep at night (because I genuinely believe proper sleeping posture can have a positive effect on your rest) my goal is NOT to make you fearful, just more informed 🤓📚 . Yes indeed the spine is adaptable and resilient, but just because it’s adaptable to load, exposing your body to unnecessary tension in less than ideal positions (ideal positions for everybody can be different) is NOT in my opinion a good idea . To better understand why everyone likes to sleep differently, you have to realize that everyone has a different configuration of “tight” / “loose” muscles, and based on that configuration, your 🧠 will decide what sleep position is most comfortable for you! . 🔻However, comfort can sometimes come at a price! If you are more comfortable with your knees high, and you have tight hamstrings, it will posterior tilt your pelvis . 🔻If you like to straighten your legs, but your psoas is tight, it will pull anteriorly on your lumbar spine and cause you to have a sway back . 🤔Does that translate to more pain? Not necessarily, but being locked in either position during sleep may carry over to your standing posture which then can affect how you actually move. It's #gameday ! 🇨🇦🏒🥅❤ * I don't know about you but for the past two weeks I have been absolutely glued to the Olympics. I have always loved watching the #Olympics but now having worked in the sport world, I feel I have such a better understanding of the hard work and dedication it takes the athletes, coaches and support staff to get to such a high level of performance. * As we gear up for a big game tonight (you know which one I'm talking about!), I can't help but think about how far the women's game has come. Every year more girls are getting involved and staying involved in the sport but we still have a ways to go. Here are just a few stats: * 🔺41% of girls age 3-17 don't participate in sport * 🔺One out of every two girls give up sport when they hit puberty and these numbers worsen dramatically between ages 12-17. * 🔺Nine out of 10 girls fail to meet Canadian exercise guidelines by the time they graduate high school * 🔺84% of adult women do not participate in sport * 🔺By 10 years of age, if a girl has yet to participate in sports, there is only a 10% chance that she will be physically active as an adult * 🔺Only 38% of senior staff in national and/or multi-sport organizations are women * 🔺In 2014, only 4% of sports programming on Canada’s national sports networks featured women’s sport (yes, that was an Olympic year!) * Today on the blog I talk about women in sport and share a little Q&A with a dynamo girl I sponsor in hockey, Ella Willoughby. [AOM EPISODE 49] . ▪️HIP IMPINGEMENT TREATMENT (PART 5)▪️ . ✨GLUTE ACTIVATION ROUTINE ✨ (BEGINNER) . . When dealing with a hip impingement, there is often weak muscles around the hip that may lead to imbalances between the muscle at the front of the hip and and muscles at the back leading to decreased “alignment” around the hip joint. . . The muscles often found weak are the posterior glute muscles (glute maximus), as well as the hip abductors (glute min/med). This routine targets those posterior/lateral hip muscles, but is by no means a recipe for all patients dealing with hip impingement! In addition, this is a beginner routine that a patient can start with to build up the strength to progress to some more dynamic and challenging exercises, and thus, not all patients will need to start here! . Glute Activation Routine: . 1️⃣ Glute Bridge ✓ ▪️Progression ➡️ Wrap a theraband around the thigh above the knee, and resist isometric external rotation (drive knees outwards). ▪️Progression ➡️ Finish with some external rotation pulses in hip extension. . 2️⃣ Side Lying Hip Abduction ✓ Progression ➡️ Wrap a theraband above the knee to increase the resistance during the movement. . . Try these out and let us know what type of glute exercises you do in your own routine! Por definição, pé plano é aquele com ausência ou diminuição do arco medial plantar (curvinha do pé). Existem várias denominações para o mesmo problema, ou seja, o pé plano também pode ser chamado de pé chato, pé pronado ou pé valgo. Os pés das crianças nascem planos de forma fisiológica. É normal, o recém-nascido, ter pés planos, desde que, os movimentos sejam livres e sem rigidez. Durante o desenvolvimento motor da criança, a curvinha medial do pé vai sendo formada. Para o seu surgimento é necessário que as articulações do pé estejam bem alinhadas, os músculos e tendões que atuam nos pés estejam funcionantes e que, os ligamentos que unem as articulações estejam com seu tensionamento normal. O pé chato pode ter como causa uma predisposição familiar ou ainda ser decorrente de um componente de hiperfrouxidão ligamentar. A maioria das pessoas não sente nenhuma dor relacionada ao pé chato. Contudo, algumas crianças, apresentando hiperfrouxidão ligamentar, podem ter uma queixa de dor muscular nas pernas ou fadiga devida ao esforço. O tratamento, quando necessário, pode ser realizado de várias formas, a depender da necessidade de cada situação concreta. Na maioria das vezes se faz o uso de sapatos ou palmilhas ortopédicas, a realização de fisioterapia e terapia medicamentosa para os casos de dores e inflamação. Em situações extremas, intervenções cirúrgicas podem ser necessárias. Soooo as you can tell I have not posted anything on here for so long. Never in a million years did I think when I managed to get a place running in the London Marathon an injury would stop me from running it in 2018. But after many sessions of physio, MRI scans and consultations, I got told that running a Marathon could cause me to have a knee replacement at the age of 40, therefore should re consider my place. Many many tears later, I decided to not let it get me down and to learn how I can potentially run a marathon in the future. I stopped worrying that my injury was preventing me from training as I no longer need to train for anything and I let my body heal. My physio and the amazing @sophiefaulknerpt have taught me ways to strengthen the knee before a run and after, as well as during normal gym sessions. I’ve learned that once the knee is strong and healed, a future problem can be prevented with the right exercises. My physio said never say never and if I really look after myself, a knee replacement won’t ever have to happen and I can run as I wish. Almost 5 months after the injury and look at me now 👀👀👀 Jump squats are a weekly thing, I can run on a treadmill and as of next week I’ll be allowed to run outdoors again. The London Marathon won’t be happening this year but trust me, I’ll do it one day💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

Day 21 . 🔺So I realized I’ve missed a few days posting. Don’t worry, we’ll get there. However, this article deserves a post of its own. This paper single-handledly highlights why I believe incorporating evidence into practice is an absolute must, and why we should strive to improve our evidence appraisal skills (as challenging as that has proven to be). . 🔺This paper highlights common cognitive errors in medicine. Essentially a cognitive error is a flaw in thinking that does not adhere to logic. All day long our brain can (and does) play tricks on us that we may not even be aware of, unless we are willing to learn. Without going to overboard here, the first step is understanding what some of the common cognitive errors are, and implement strategies to combat them in figure or current practice. . 🔺To make matters worse, not only do they exist and we have to be aware of them, we have to (try) and be aware of when researchers are making these errors and how they impact the evidence. By no means is this easy, but it certainly requires a lot of practice! . 🔺If for some reason evidence isn’t your thing, that’s fine, I’m not here to say one way is better than another. Just be sure to find ways to minimize cognitive errors in your practice. I’d hate to be the one on the other side of that meme. #DontPlayYourself . 📚 P.S. if this absolutely blows your mind as it does mine, please check out the book “Thinking Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman. Grateful for the gift I got for my birthday from Jeff’s Mom. Circulation and pain therapy at home kit. Amazing. As it definitely helps. Unfortunately my Achilles Tendinitis is super painful right now. So light workouts at home and eating healthy. I sure miss working out at the YMCA.
