"Runaway" is a debut song written by Stephen Barker Liles, Robert Blackledge and Canaan Smith and recorded by American country music group Love and Theft. It is the lead-off single from the band's 2009 debut album World Wide Open. Love and Theft is an American country music group founded by Stephen Barker Liles, Eric Gunderson, and Brian Bandas, all three of whom alternated as lead singers and acoustic guiarists. Signed to Lyric Street Records subsidiary Carolwood Records in 2009, Love and Theft made their chart debut in early 2009 with the single "Runaway," which reached the Top 10 on Billboard Hot Country Songs. In 2011, Love and Theft continued as a duo consisting of Gunderson and Liles. They moved to RCA Records Nashville that year and released the single "Angel Eyes", which became their first number 1 single. It and the Top 40 singles "Runnin' Out of Air" and "If You Ever Get Lonely" all appear on their second, self-titled album.
CMT asked about their career trajectory, Bandas answers, “It was a year or a year and a-half from the time we got together to the time they said, ’OK, we’re going to sign you.’ And then, another year … .” “That’s what I was going to say,” adds Liles. “That was the worst year.” “From the time we knew we were getting signed, to when we actually got signed and our lives actually started to change, was like another extremely painful year,” Bandas continued. “Contract negotiations. Legal and business stuff, and there’s nothing you can do to expedite it. You just sit there and you wait for someone to call and say, ’OK, we’ve finished such-and-such now.'” “Because if you complain,” Gunderson noted, “they’ll say, ’Oh, you guys don’t want the right contract?'” now press play▶️
