Stunned, I follow him up the stairs~
we climb out of my head. “See,” he says, “it’s here, it’s here.” ~Wendy Candida Havlir Cherry, from my little book of poetry, The Reach is (W)holy, inspired by the sacred.
This poem was written probably 15 or so years ago and was one of my first. It came from a dream, where I was being led out of the limited space that I understood as “me” and into a realm of something quite different. The “he” in the dream, is my now husband. The space we arrived in was mystical and boundless. Sometimes I forget how limiting my mind can be, how repetitive and simple some of my over-domesticated thoughts are. When I remember again, I climb out of the limitations and into the heart of vastness~a space where my sacred truth lives, unfettered and wild and full of possibility. This is the path I choose~ to uncover and altar the sacred in everything. This is my devotion. Sometimes the old tattered weavings of my thought require tending by the fire. We are all devoted to something. Whatever we are focused on in the moment is our devotion, at least on some level. This pink marble heart arrived yesterday from my sister. It is generous and full, like the commitment I come back to as a practice, over and over again. And every time I forget and remember again, the devotion is fuller, pinker, stronger.
