My rant. There was a news article about a mother who refused chemotherapy for her child, the courts got involved and placed her child in the care of another person so that he could be brought to the hospital for treatment. The mom is allowed to stay with him, she is not allowed to give him any medical care. So many people blamed the doctors and the courts and CPS saying it’s a parent’s choice and the doctors, CPS and the courts should not get involved. Yes, chemotherapy is not always effective and it can cause harmful side effects, including death, but that is the only proven method that works at this point in time. Would you gamble with your child’s life? I wouldn’t and I didn’t. I would have loved to have avoided dripping poison in her veins, but THAT was the only viable option. It’s not a doctor’s opinion in this case, it is scientific fact. Let’s do more research to allow better treatment options for the future. However; for now, this mother’s obligation is to get her child the help he needs before it’s too late. The fine details and intricacies of the childhood cancer world is so in depth that the average person will never fully understand unless, God forbid, they live it. In the meantime, please don’t stand there and wag your finger at chemotherapy and how it kills, us cancer moms know that, and that is the worst part about treating our children. That compromise where treatment could mean death, and non treatment could mean death. We chose the only chance she had at survival. Rant over.
