We tend to use the word focused in the context of it being an anomaly. As if the practice of being black and successful is such a rarity, that an individual would need to be labeled in order to describe their accomplishments. Words like “woke” give us the idea that someone pays attention to the environment that surrounds them, but shouldn’t we all do that? Why aren’t we all “woke”?
More often than not, I find that these labels are given to those individuals that stand out from the crowd. These labels are not self proclaimed, and are often accepted with an unprecedented form of humility. The truth is that we all aren’t “woke”. We all aren’t “focused”. But we watch those that are, and their steps create the path for those that will come behind them. So if a label helps you find a path to a doer, that you as a dreamer needs, then let it be so.
