I’m a day late with my #transformationtuesday post, mostly because I hardly ever know what day it is 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ #wahmlife ⠀ ⠀ Transformations don’t always mean weight loss. Skinny doesn’t always mean healthy. In my twenties I was 110 pounds soaking wet. I could drink beer like water, eat nothing but greasy fast food and run on 3 hours of sleep. I was skinny, but I was far from healthy.⠀ ⠀ Now, it my thirties, I am 30 pounds heavier. I traded beers for the occasional glass of wine, eating out for eating in and you bet this momma is getting 8 hours of sleep 😂⠀ ⠀ I may not be the same skinny mini I was 10 years ago, but I am healthier and genuinely the most happy I have ever been. My transformation has been physical and mental and it’s all about balance.⠀ ⠀ 10 years, multiple city changes, a marriage, a baby and a lifestyle change (apparently not a hairstyle change 😂) 110lbs ➡️ 167lbs 🤰🏻 ➡️ 140lbs postpartum. The number on the scale doesn’t mean 💩, being healthy is where it’s at y’all 🥰
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. 💃🏻👊🏻💪 Being almost three months postpartum hasn’t been easy, I’ll be the first to admit that. Pregnant women are often given lists of “don’ts”: don’t eat this! Don’t do this! And when it comes to training your core, it’s no different. . We’re not supposed to lie flat on our back, nor do anything that puts too much downward strain on the abdominal muscles such as planks. So does that mean we can’t train our core when pregnant? . No way!! It’s actually still very important to keep those muscles strong throughout your pregnancy. And my number one way to do this is.... . . . . Farmers Carries! . Why, you ask? . Farmers Carries allow you to activate your core muscles without the type of abdominal strain that causes diastasis recti, or a separation of the abdominal muscles common during pregnancy. . Additionally, and more importantly, they allow you to train your core in a fully functional way! Carrying your baby/toddler around while also holding other things like groceries, etc will soon be a way of life. Learning how to engage your core in this way will make all of that exponentially easier! . And third, your posture is about to take a huge hit once you’re constantly holding, nursing, and rocking your baby. Is it possible to get your body back after having a baby? ⁣ Right after having my little girl, getting back to the gym felt like WORK.⁣ ⁣ Don't get me wrong, I basically RAN to the gym when I got cleared.. and I don't run lol⁣ ⁣ But after a couple weeks of working out I felt like I was starting over. Like all the hard work I had put in over the years was reversed.⁣ ⁣ I had to remind myself what I remind my clients every day, TRUST THE PROCESS.⁣ ⁣ Keep your head down, your attitude up, and just do the work.⁣ ⁣ Get the workouts in, get the meals in, and don't let anything discourage you.⁣ ⁣ So that's what I did.⁣ ⁣ And here I am, almost four months postpartum and I feel so great.⁣ ⁣ Not quite back to where I was, but man am I getting close!⁣ ⁣ So for those of you pregnant or planning to get pregnant, who are worried about losing your body or never getting it back after your baby.. STOP.⁣ ⁣ Focus on nourishing yourself and your baby, and when the time comes to get that body back, you will.⁣ ⁣ Don't listen to those who say you can't look good again or you have to just "accept that your body has changed forever".⁣ ⁣ Because YES, it is so important to love your body in all of its forms as it changes. #week4postpartum Starting to get some speed back on my runs(although it’s def going to be awhile to get my normal pace back), doing my pelvic floor exercises daily and going easy on the strength training. I can def tell I’ve lost some muscle tone and strength but I also created a baby so I’m not going to let it bother me. Actually, it’s a good thing bc now I have big goals and there’s nothing I love more than setting fitness goals for myself! I’m focusing on sleeping when I can, short faster runs so I can hit some 5/10K goals to get me ready for a fast half marathon this late fall, 3 strength and conditioning days, and taking care of my body w yoga. I wish I could give you the SECRET tip to motivation and working out. Sadly, the hard truth is that IT’S A CHOICE! - The good days, the uneventful days, the pull your hair out days... It’s just another choice you make. - For years I watched other women rock their fitness journeys and couldn’t understand why I couldn’t do that... The hard truth was that I hadn’t gotten my butt up off the couch or chosen to be disciplined to see what I COULD accomplish. - When I decided to stop being FEARFUL of what I might not accomplish and just actually see what I could accomplish, my entire life, health, and outlook changed. I was the only one holding myself back. - My advice? Stop searching for the secrets and quick fixes and just do the dang thing.

Baby Brooks has been such a great supporter of me going back to Crossfit, postpartum. This is my 5th week back, and I mastered a small movement that I hadn’t been able to before I got pregnant. Box jumps! I’m finally able to do all box jumps without doing any box step ups during my WOD. It’s a small thing, but I feel good about it. Living less than 50 meters from my box sure has been a blessing. I have been able to tote my buddy with me, most days, when he agrees to it, and he either sits and watches or takes a nap while I work out, through loud music and weights slamming. Props to my wonderful husband for supporting me when I need to go alone or just get a jog in. * **POSTPARTUM FITNESS*** I'm working with @hannahgib87 to help her lose baby weight, and to regain muscle tone and strength after pregnancy. The superman is a great exercise for improving posture, defining back muscles and strengthening the posterior chain and core. In the second video I've added a pipe to ensure her body is in line, maximising effectiveness and minimising risk of injury. What happens to your core during pregnancy? As the belly expands, the abdominal muscles stretch and the back muscles shorten. The joints in the pelvis become unstable and the pelvic floor weakens under the weight of the fetus. Postpartum life can also take it's toll on your body, with nursing, being sedentary whilst recovering, and lifting the baby all playing a part. With so many changes to the core during pregnancy and postpartum, it's important, not only for strength, but for function that this is all rebuilt. Postpartum exercise is about progression, listen to your body, and go at a pace that suits you. Beautiful Chaos.⠀ ⠀ Working out with kids at home is tough. When they are just little they nap a couple times a day, you can pop them in a exasaucer or Jolly Jumper and squeeze in a quick workout. ⠀ ⠀ But as they get older, it is harder to keep them contained, out of trouble and out of your hair for even 30 minutes. ⠀ ⠀ Sure, we can get up early, or workout after they go to bed... But sometimes at the end of the day you are just exhausted. ⠀ ⠀ This is a huge focus for me in my classes. I want to create an environment that Mamas feel comfortable to bring their kids (yes ALL their kids) to class and we can workout together. ⠀ ⠀ Sure some classes you will get a bit more distracted than others, but you will still get out of the house, and get in a workout that you may have given up on after the first 3 distractions at home. ⠀ ⠀ Lots of gyms offer childcare which is amazing! But that can get pricey when you have more than one kiddo, and impossible if your little one is a #stage4clinger . ⠀ ⠀ So pack some snacks, grab the kiddos and come meet me for a workout. ⠀ Thursdays @ 9:30am at @drformoms in Brentwood. Four miles at 4am; then off to class to get my LTC (license to carry), and done by 1pm! 🙌🏽 . I always ask God to use me and today, I happened to be at the right place, at the right time. While in the LTC class mid-morning, a young man started to have a seizure. We were almost done with the class, when it happen. I was the first to witness what was happening and stepped in to help. I know my medical background helped, but also having grown up with someone with a seizure disorder, kept me calm and thinking logically. It’s amazing how some by-standers may shut down or panic in these situations. You definitely have to delegate responsibilities (as those of us who are CPR certified are taught). Emergency assistance was called and I used the man’s thumb to unlock his phone (after a few failed attempts), to get ahold of a family member. He became more cognizant, while I was on the phone and ER services arrived to take over. I was able to get in contact with his father and his parents shows up pretty quick, to take him home. He seemed to be doing much better, which was a relief. I didn’t get to check on him bc we wanted to give him some privacy and also still had to take our final exam (I got a 100, btw 🙌🏽). 😊 I obviously wasn’t glad that he had a seizure at all, but thank goodness we were there AND he wasn’t driving, bc class was literally maybe 15 minutes from being over. At any rate, today was a good day! 🙂
First resistance completed with @kayla_itsines app! I HURT! I tried to take it slow, only two laps per circuit. My muscles in my legs are just deconditioned from resting during my last trimester and after giving birth. The sore feeling will go away I know and my strength will return! My balance also needs some work because I’m miss shaky over here just doing a simple squat. It will improve with time and trying to have good posture with each workout movement. I feel so good on the other hand...I’m happy I could complete this with only the rest breaks built in and no cheating! I worked up a good sweat without having to leave my home while the newborn napped. I feel energized and ready to conquer whatever comes my way. Headed into Week 3 of the 21-Day Fix Program 💪 This has been a tough game for me mentally. 2 years ago, I ran a full marathon and was in the best shape of my life. Since then, I had a difficult knee surgery and a pregnancy. It feels like it has been forever since my body was my own. Now, doing the workouts, I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that I am out of shape. There are some things my knee still can’t do. There are things I am not strong enough to do. I have wanted to quit because “if I can’t do it right, then what’s the point?!” I have had to give myself grace to modify and do the workouts to the best of MY OWN ability. I am down 5.5 pounds in 2 full weeks of this program with only minor nutrition setbacks. I am thankful for the results I’ve seen as I work to take back my body. I commit to finishing the last week of this program by giving 100% effort, even if it isn’t perfect or pretty. Progress is the goal, not perfection.
10 weeks postpartum today, time is flying by!! I started @bexyfitness88 postpartum programme and can already feel the difference. I definitely have times when I feel like it’s impossible to go for a wee let alone workout but being sent week by week workouts I just focus on doing 3 a week. it’s not easy, after growing and carrying a little person for 9months and then recovering from childbirth while being what feels like a milk machine.. But taking just a small amount of time to help me get fit again has helped so much. I wanted to share a go-to for my kiddos’ breakfast right now (and me and my husband some nights!)😁 I use the standard Bisquick mix (2cups) and add additional ingredients to make a high protein pancake: 1cup of plain Greek yogurt 1cup of cottage cheese 1cup of milk (or buttermilk if you have) 3 eggs (instead of recommended 2) Other ingredients: 3tsp Baking Powder 3TBS of oil or butter 2tsp of vanilla 2TB of Truvia You could also add protein powder if you wanted extra for your own pancakes. I’ve also blended up the liquid ingredients with spinach first and then stirred in (green pancakes!) and the kids don’t even care.👌 I mix it all in a Tupperware so I can just throw in the fridge for breakfast tomorrow! 🥞🥞
David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage⠀⁠ 2012⠀⁠ ⠀⁠ I'm not the lady whose vacation dream is to go to Bora Bora and lay on the beach for a week straight drinking Pina Coladas. I'm also not the tourist that wants to visit all the TOP TEN MUST SEE SITES listed on Travelocity when visiting a new city. For me, I look for unique, once in a lifetime, experiences. Off the beaten path spots. Eat where the locals eat, consume the authentic culture that makes the city so unique. I want to spend time with residents who can show me why THEY love their hometown so much.⠀⁠ ⠀⁠ When @elizabethlloyd and I decided to go to Kenya, I knew I wanted to volunteer our photography to incredible organizations that are increasing the quality of life for their people, wildlife and environment. One of those was the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. ⠀⁠ ⠀⁠ It was, by far, one of the most incredible moments of my entire life. We started at 4:30 in the morning, navigating the quiet roads of Nairobi, through the streetlight-less windy dirt roads, until we reached the orphanage. We then got to spend 12 hours documenting all the hard work that goes into caring for orphanage baby elephants. The devotion, love and commitment these caretakers display is indescribable. They sometimes leave their families for months at a time, to ensure these elephants have a chance for a successful, healthy, happy life. ⠀⁠ ⠀⁠ I plan on sharing more of these pictures throughout the next year.
