WATER LOADING: MAXIMIZING YOUR PERFORMANCE⠀ ⠀ If you’ve been around powerlifting or weightlifting competitions for any length of time, you will likely have heard of lifters cutting weight by water loading 💧 ⠀ .⠀ Since your body is about 60% water, the idea is to 2-4X your water intake for a few days to cause lots of urine production 🚽 ⠀ .⠀ When you decide to cut back on your water intake before weigh-ins, your urine production should still be high - so you’ll continue excreting more water and more weight 📉 ⠀ .⠀ It's true, drinking 2-4x more water is WAY more challenging than just sitting in the sauna. But your performance will likely not suffer as much using the water loading approach, as opposed to the water cutting method involving heat and sweating ☀️ 😥 ⠀ .⠀ Last year, a study was performed to test this exact method. Here are the basics:⠀ ▪️Subjects water loaded for 3 days⠀ ▪️They drank 100mL/kg of body mass⠀ ▪️Water loading group lost 3.2% of BW⠀ ▪️Normal water consumption group (40mL/kg) only lost about 2.4% of BW⠀ .⠀ The most practical takeaways from this study include:⠀ ⭐️ Performance after rehydration was NOT negatively impacted. This method appears to result in weight loss, without a drop in performance!⠀ ⭐️ Blood work was fine; sodium and potassium levels remained normal.⠀ .⠀ Unfortunately, the researchers also had subjects in both groups on a regulated meal plan, with a 10-15% energy deficit, while having sodium and fibre intake tightly controlled 🔒⠀ .⠀ According to researcher Greg Nuckols:⠀ ~50% of the weight loss was probably due to the lower fibre intake⠀ ~25% was likely attributable to the water loading method⠀ The final ~25% was probably due to the short-term energy restriction⠀ .⠀ This means that before implementing a strategy like water loading, you should focus on lowering your fibre intake - first 🔑 🔑 ⠀ .⠀ To sum things up, a 3% drop in BW is a doable target when cutting for a competition. Just gotta say I hate music they play at gyms...really really do...doesnt get me hype when I'm lifting whatsoever. Thank God for headphones lol anyways went in to hit my first actual working set on low bar since my meet. Been using the SSB more lately just cause I can focus more with my hips on it than my lower back. But I went in today with a 5x5 of 365 and then decided to hit 415 for triples after. Hands down, eating is better than lifting. Last weeks leg day stuff. Leg presses were pauses with added weight each set (no video, just a screen shot of me stuffing my face) and unfortunately my last set of FS didn’t record because it stopped when I threw my headphones so here’s my second to last set at a lighter weight than the top set. The top set wasn’t that amazing either 🤷🏼‍♀️.
