Poison was... amazing, truly different from any Snow White retelling I’ve ever read. It is the first of Sarah Pinborough’s Wicked Fairy Tales. Lilith is the queen of an unnamed kingdom, her husband’s second wife, and she is considered to be ethereally beautiful, with a demeanor to match her icy beauty. She is only four years older than her stepdaughter Snow White, who is beloved by her people. Lilith cannot stand Snow White, and as soon as her husband goes off to war she is determined to find her a husband so she can be sent away, so that Lilith will never have to deal with her again. But Snow White is young and wild and free, and she does not wish to be married, or to leave her kingdom.
I absolutely adored Poison. It had everything a classic Snow White tale should have: a wicked stepmother, a beautiful young girl, a family of dwarves, a talking mirror, a stoic huntsman, and a handsome prince. However, it was darker than most fairytales are. It was different, exciting, and brilliantly executed. Beware of the slight bit of smut if you don’t have an eye for that sort of thing. I thought this was simply amazing and very well written. I particularly enjoyed the characters of the huntsman, Snow White, and Lilith. The ending killed me, and I couldn’t put it down! All in all, excellently written, and I rate it 9.5/10.
