A Word on Processed Food (not the ones in the pic 😉) As a nutritionist, I know that weight gain is a multifactorial process, involving excess energy intake vs. expenditure, genetic and metabolic differences, emotional dependence on food and other physical and psychological conditions. However, when I’m asked to single out one particular reason – without a doubt it is overconsumption of processed foods 🍟🍕🍭🍬 Processed foods overproduction, easy access to them, long shelf life and last but not least – palatability (high fat and high sugar content make them ever more desirable, and that’s not to mention a myriad of additives for taste, flavor and color) have made them an easy meal option. What is my problem with processed foods? I do not think they are food… Even though they are considered GRAS – Generally Recognized As Safe (their ingredients, to be exact), there’s no clarification on how much of it is safe, how often is safe to eat them, in which combinations – are they safe meaning they won’t kill us at once? What about in 5-10-20 years of repeated regular consumption? Are there other effects on our bodies besides weight gain, and why do they cause weight gain in first place? What science says: 1. Cancer: A cohort study, published in British Medical Journal in February 2018 on consumption of ultra-processed foods (read candy, chips, soft drinks, junk food, and fast food) and cancer risk found that 10% increase in the proportion of ultra-processed foods in the diet was associated with a significant increase of greater than 10% in risks of overall and breast cancer. Type 2 Diabetes: According to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, processed foods contribute to the development of insulin resistance due to their concentrations of chemicals called advanced glycation endproducts, or AGEs... The anxiety is seeping in beneath the door like smoke. My lungs keep wondering why I cough so much that I choke. My heart beat crashes like a cymbal. Lately, I’ve been searching for a signal. You can’t keep sitting aloof with nothing to do... watching the clock as another moment waves goodbye to you. I’ve been looking in the mirror to face the fear that I’ve done all this to myself. My attention turns to the realization that I’ve been killing myself. I’ve wanted to die & my body listened. I need to change that tune so I work my body ‘till it glistens. Shit, our bodies weren’t built to withstand the waste we consume. Whether it’s #processedfood or the thoughts that’ll bury us in the tomb, it’s our choice what to do. I use to over compensate for an inner compass that never pointed straight in any direction. I was pretty much lost ‘till she caught my attention. Just like #lucy , meeting her led to further #introspection . I realized it’s me in my own fucking way. Idk wut depresses me more... that I know that I’m the cause of all my depression... or the lack of importance all of that has wen u still find yourself doubting those facts. It’s funny to me that I take acid to feel complete but what I find isn’t that missing puzzle piece. Instead I land on an insight into being that shows me all sorts of colorful different scenes. Sorta like my dreams. Sorta like I’m floating in-between.. heaven n hell.. I know both paths well. I’ve been here before. No, this time my heart won’t be ignored. No, this time I’ll soar. Tuesday Tip. Inflammation 😬 _ In its most basic form, inflammation is beneficial to the body and is simply the body's response to injury. Without it, "our wounds, bruises, sprains, and fractures would never heal". The problem, however, occurs when inflammation becomes chronic. Which, unfortunately, has now become the norm in our society, especially in the U.S. _ Chronic inflammation occurs when the body has stopped understanding which internal threats require an inflammatory response. And in this confusion, the body begins attacking itself - white blood cells start to attach to organs, cells, and tissues, making them weaker. This then manifests as autoimmune diseases, depression, heart disease, arthritis, any disease ending in -itis (ex: bronchitis: inflammation of the bronchial tubes, dermatitis: inflammation of the skin, colitis: inflammation of the colon, etc), cancers, and SO MUCH MORE. Oh yeah, that mucus you keep trying to clear from your throat every morning & throughout the day? Yep, inflammation. _ Now, my ancestors weren't dying from and living with these afflictions, so what's up? Yet again, our drastic change in diet is what's up. The high intake of meat, dairy, processed + sugar laden foods has gone WAY ⬆️, while the intake of life in the form of fruits/veggies has gone WAY ⬇️. The correlation is plain as day. _ In EVERY moment, our bodies are working FOR us, but we can't keep dumping garbage in and expecting it to perform at 100%. In my video yesterday I spoke about how some take care of their cars better than their bodies. Many wouldn't dare put 87 gas in a car that calls for 93, but somehow don't ever consider their bodies in the same way. _ Now that you've read this info, you can't un-read or un-know it. This corner of my house makes me sigh a little every time I wake up to it. I was thinking this morning about stress as I wrap up one week and prepare to start another... Stress is one of those things that’s not actually real. It *feels* very real. But someone else could be in the same situation and not stressed at all. That doesn’t mean our stress isn’t valid or meaningful, just that it isn’t necessarily the ultimate truth. When we are stressed we are not living in the present. Thinking about the past or anticipating the future, we create a concept of stress in our mind’s eye. Even though it feels like it is happening now because we are thinking about it right now. The “now” is not stressful… everything is fine in this moment, and in this moment…

I still think about these three pigs. I still walk into the orchard and miss seeing them running over in hope of food, always food. As much as I was told not to get too close to them and not to get attached, I definitely did. I still have my favourite pig as my screensaver on my phone. But I truly believe that our level of disconnect from our food is so extreme that we need to start pulling ourselves back in the right direction. Connecting with an animal before slaughtering it is the other end of the scale, but if we don’t want to accept this reality, what is the alternative? Many people, understandably, choose to go vegetarian or vegan for fear of where their meat or dairy might be coming from. My worry is that there are just as many ‘unknowns’, if not more, happening in other foods. Do we really understand half the ingredients of half the products on the supermarket shelves? We’re never going to be invited behind the tightly closed doors of food processing plants, there are things hidden in there that we can only imagine (if you can bear to). Farming might not be perfect, but I think that most farmers in this country would be happy to open up their doors, walk you round their farm and discuss their situations. And I think that’s much more than can be said for the manufacturing and processing industry...

So last Friday, I was craving for “msg” lol 😂 #guiltyascharged so I honestbee-d pancit canton along with some other things. Then I cooked it for merienda, and enjoyed it by myself. But the thing is.... I don’t think my body is still well adapted with the junk that pancit canton is especially since we’d been trying to make better food and health choices (c’mon it’s soooo processed and definitely unhealthy, and I get it that we looove it) 🤦🏻‍♀️ So after I ate it, my tummy got all bad and aching! 😭 It went on for a very long time, but since the discomfort is already a nuisance, I decided to place a drop of #Digize essential oil on my belly button. ‘Lo and behold, not even 20 minutes after applying the oil, pain away! Overeating, poor memory formation, learning disorders, depression—all have been linked in recent research to the over-consumption of sugar. And these linkages point to a problem that is only beginning to be better understood: what our chronic intake of added sugar is doing to our brains. ⠀ According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the average American consumes 156 pounds of added sugar per year. That's five grocery store shelves loaded with 30 or so one pound bags of sugar each. If you find that hard to believe, that's probably because sugar is so engrained in our diets that most of us have no idea how much we're consuming. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) puts the amount at 27.5 teaspoons of sugar a day per capita, which translates to 440 calories—nearly one quarter of a typical 2000 calorie a day diet. The key word in all of the stats is "added." While a healthy diet would contain a significant amount of naturally occurring sugar (in fruits and grains, for example), the problem is that we're chronically consuming much more added sugar in processed foods, generally in the rapidly absorbed form of fructose. That's an important clarification because our brains need sugar every day to function. Brain cells require two times the energy needed by all the other cells in the body; roughly 10% of our total daily energy requirements. This energy is derived from glucose (blood sugar), the gasoline of our brains. Sugar is not the brain's enemy—added sugar is. Research indicates that a diet high in added sugar reduces the production of a brain chemical known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Without BDNF, our brains can't form new memories and we can't learn (or remember) much of anything. Nutritional evangelicalism! Do you know the true history of the vegetarian and vegan movements? In the West, it can be pinned to a woman who had dreams she labelled "prophecies," who founded a church which grew powerful enough to impose its temperance and modesty beliefs on the rest of society. That church actively attempted to merge restricted eating under a confluence of social activism, religious ideals, pseudo science, politics and philosophy. Meet Ellen G. White. ✝️ White is a cofounder of the Seveth Day Adventist Church (SDA) 1844. Between 1844 to 1915 White had over 2000 visions. Yep, these visions started when she was 17. Some visions included a vegetarian diet and abstaining from impropriety and animal appetites and masturbation. She insisted flesh "excited animal passions and strengthens lower passions." ✝️ "Meat gives you cancer" stems from her 1864 vision. ✝️ These visions, it should be noted, started after White had a rock projectile smashed into her nose. At age 9 this placed her in a coma for 3 weeks and then induced amnesia. Her rambling prolific writings and visions as an adult are consistent with temporal lobe epilepsy. ✝️ White continued revealing her prophecies until her death, and published over 60 books. She owned a publishing house with her husband and produced over 100k pages of doctrine. ✝️ SDA teachings influenced others who became obsessed with science proving their church beliefs (instead of inverse). Lenna Cooper was an adherent of the SDA. She made it her life's mission to impose her church's dietary beliefs on society at-large. She helped found the American Dietitians Association in 1917. ✝️ In 1988 the Dietetics Association reviewed a position paper. On the 9 person committee, 8/9 were vegetarians, 5/8 were SDA members. The 9th had ties to the processed food industry. No plant-based stacking there... ✝️ In the early 1900s there were over 100 cereal companies, most in Battle Creek, Michigan most by SDA members. Kelloggs is still one of the wealthiest food corporations in the world. White assisted Kellogg to gain his MD. This processed grain food-like product was about temping down carnal cravings, to reduce sexuality.

Can it really be as simple as ‘eat real food’? Folks, I think it can. You see, here’s the thing. For millions of years, real food is all there was. There was minimal processing of foods and the processing that eventually did happen was all manual. Not hyper-processed, but rather, hand or stone ground. Today, un-processed food is a luxury in the US. We don’t tend to think of it that way, but processed food is available in an over-abundance. And over-abundance ↪️ over-consumption. You see, that is the current goal of America’s food system. To get us to eat as much as possible. But, when you eat real food, you don’t have a choice. You don’t get hooked in so easily because the body can only eat so much meat and fruit and vegetables before it will tell you it’s time to stop eating. #realfoodRD
