“Unfortunately, I did not invest in my academics as I would have liked. However, I believe that was my fault for living the college life and depending on playing professional basketball. My academic advisor persuaded me into my major because it was majority of my teams degree. I put my trust in her hands and that was what was advised. I suggest that athletes be involved in the process of their academics and actually chose majors that will benefit them far after their sport.” - Former LSU Basketball player and current Professional Basketball Player. -
The NCAA and college athletic programs encourage athletes to be students first and athletes second, but what is puzzling is that academics in college are actually designed around college athletics and not the other way around. Can’t take that class, practice is at that time. Can’t take that degree, it’s time consuming & will conflict with your sport and it’s scheduling. When the SPORT is all that is ever made of importance to athletes, how do you think they will then view their academics and where do you think they will mainly shift their focus? Yes the graduation rate for athletes is high and more athletes are graduating, but if you take a closer look .. what are these athletes graduating in and how do those degrees help them in the real world when it’s time to get a big girl/big boy job? What is the meaning of graduating if your degree is meaningless and does not correlate with your skill sets? A small percentage of student athletes all around the country turn pro, but what happens to those that dedicate TO their sport their whole college careers , neglect their education , and then later find out that life isn’t what they thought it would be?. You might be getting a degree , but did you really get an education? - Acheil Tac. -
Athletes : Be involved in your academics and never put it in the hands of another to make decisions for you. Put the same amount of energy you put into your sport also into your education.
