How am I choosing my post workout and what types of protein supplements are worthwhile? 1. POWDER-typically, ~70-80% of calories from powder is from protein which is awesome! That allows ppl to hit protein number while also minimizing calories daily. If ur trying to lose weight fast, stick mixing it w/ water, maybe milk as long as it’s planned in the daily caloric allowance. Don’t add a bunch of peanut butter or other stuff unless trying to gain weight(then add a bunch of crap, within reason), or if ur completely substituting a shake as a meal+u calculate the calories precisely. 2. Protien bars, cookies? Energy bars? Eh, not a fan. The price is more than powder+the % of calories from protein is WAY lower than powder . Therefore the non-powder options are less versatile. I recommend as long as ur not on a strict fast weight loss plan to try a few products+see if u enjoy them enough to substitute out common Lower protein snacks(regular cookies,granola bars, etc.). Protein bars/cookies/ice cream are still 🛠 to b used to make nutrition planning more convenient. They’re just “not as convenient” as powders. (If I had to suggest a few protein bars/ice creams), quest bars+halo top ice cream is 💯😎. I would say particularly for ice cream the protein substitute may significantly help u w/ flexible dieting 3. CHOOSING POST WORKOUT? Depends on how ur surrounding meals are/were for that day! For example, for me tonight I am choosing the yogurt of 80cal+12g protein. That is because even though it’s less %cal from protein than powder, I’m on the higher range of calories for this day and I’ve already hit my protein number. So becuz this is the case, the yogurt still gives me some post workout protein b4 bed+is a little less calories then the powder. It’s all w/ in context for that day+ur individual plan! Highly recommend @myproteinuk lean protein powder! . . I often don’t like protein powder as I feel like it can be thick and have a funny after taste. However, my protein lean protein powder is the only protein powder I have tried which I do not get this from. . . This is my second large bag of there smooth chocolate mix and myself & @rossini_fitness thought we would also try another flavour, sticky toffee pudding. Both flavour are great with coconut milk, almond milk, water and my personal favourite chocolate coconut milk. . . The smooth chocolate powder with @alpro almond or coconut chocolate milk is amazing if you have a sweet tooth! It taste just like a chocolate milkshake. Our bodies are fascinating machines... the structure, the systems, and the complexity can be intriguing, interesting, and sometimes... frustrating! . But, the good news is, not all things about the human body are complicated. . There are checks and balances and orders of operations that the body HAS to follow. Which in turn makes it very simple on what we need to do to set ourselves up for better results in those areas. . For example, we know that working out has many great benefits, but it’s also a destructive activity. That is why rest and recovery is CRUCIAL to earning results. If we don't take adequate amounts of rest or recover properly, we can not achieve the best results possible. . We also know that when we are resistance training, we are breaking down our muscle tissue and depleting our energy stores (glycogen, which is stored carbohydrates) in the muscle. For proper recovery, we must replenish these energy stores ASAP with carbohydrates, and give our body protein to help recover the muscle tissue. . Now, that process of training hard... breaking down our body... taking a quick digesting carb and protein immediately after training to initiate recovery ... and then fueling our body with good nutrition and allowing for adequate amounts of rest is what will lead to the results we want. . Not complicated at all. . So, if you workout twice a day doing resistance training.... what's the process? . Well... it's the same process. You're body is still going to break down muscle tissue and deplete energy stores... therefore you still need to give it a quick digesting carb and protein immediately after training to initiate recovery... because it's even more important now since you are going to need even more time to rest and recover since you are asking twice as much from your body! . So if you are training twice a day and you want the best results ... which has to be the case if your training twice a day... then don't over complicate this and simply follow the order of operations of your body. . That’s why I’ve used Phormula-1 and Ignition since 2011... it’s been the best post workout combo to get me into recovery ASAP after training. . #SimpleAndEffective

Contrary to common belief, a 2013 meta-analysis (a study that collates all relevant reserach) has shown that protein timing does not impact muscle size or strength. Rather, a daily dose of ~1.6g/kg/day (seperated into ~0.25g/kg doses) impacts muscle size and strength the most. HOWEVER, this DOES NOT mean that consuming nothing before or after exercise is more beneficial, as this would actually be detrimental to muscle size/strength and overall health and well-being.
