The Battle of Standing Rock is so very fresh in my mind and I think about it very often. So it is strange to post this as a #TBT
photo even though it is almost exactly 2 years old. The fight against DAPL, the US gov’t, and the work to protect our water never ended and continues today.
Halloween is coming up and already soon the #nativeamericancostume #nativeamericanmakeup #pocahontas
costumes will flood Instagram. If you know people who do this, friends, family, coworkers, classmates, be an ally and tell them to stop. If you’re a markup artist, stylist, blogger, influencer, celebrity, be an ally, step up, and help a Native out - tell people why this is wrong. I know many Native people who do this on a daily and regular basis... it is exhausting and traumatizing to continually see aspects of our culture stolen, taken out of context, misused and abused. •
At the Battle of Standing Rock, Native people were violently assaulted by law enforcement, sprayed in the face with freezing water, shot at with rubber bullets - all for protecting water. Dressing up Indian, pretending to be Native for a day is such a slap in the face to the struggles Native people are still fighting against today. We are prosecuted for simply existing in our culture, for wanting to protect our spirituality, when costume wearers who want to pretend to be us just want to take it all off at the end of the day. My culture is not your costume.
