Last night, I was asked during an interview where I find the strength to keep going, to keep thriving despite my many setbacks—from divorce to poverty to trolls...
First of all, society as a whole, this system was not created for someone like me to thrive. This system is not user-friendly for a fat, Black, and Muslim girl with no daddy, from Detroit. Whose also hard-headed and has a big mouth.
Secondly, although I used to dream about some of the things I’m doing, have done, have accomplished, I never thought it’d actually happen to me. Never in a million years had I thought that I’d be flown out, my opinions taken into account, my voice and my face and my body heard.
Every single time I’ve wanted to quit, I’d get a feature, have a random influencer tell me to keep going, a fan/follower/supporter buy a webinar or donate funds to help pay my bills. And, I took each as a sign.
I derive strength from not only myself but each and every one of you. Your likes, your comments (which I read every one of), your DMs and reshares fuel me.
I was once that girl who never looked in the mirror. Who hadn’t seen the light within me. My strength is reaching that one girl who avoids mirrors, too, who holds her head down, whose voice is silenced and igniting that inner flame so that she may carry that torch to the next woman and to the next woman and to the next...
In what ways have I empowered, affected you? How do you inspire girls/women? Have you ever just wanted to quit, why? Let’s chat. 📸@ettaflyy
