Face to Face - Econolive ~ Vagrant Records - 1996 ~ 1st press /? This record came out in what is probably regarded as Face to Face's "prime" - right around the time their self-titled LP came out, and this live EP is a snapshot of the time period. They were already one of my favourite bands, but I was a bit nervous about the fact that Matt Riddle had left the band. I play the bass too, and I have always loved Riddle's work. I believe that his style helped define the band's sound on their first two LPs (and various EPs). It was always skilled but not so over the top that it took away from Face to Face's talent for excellent songwriting. So, it's fair to say that my favourite punk bassist was leaving my favourite punk band, and I was a bit worried. However, when the s/t LP dropped, it was clear that @therealshifty66
was going to be more than capable of filling the void. This live EP has songs from all of the first three LPs, and really you cannot go wrong on those releases. They could have taken any six songs and it would still be a great setlist, let's be honest here.
But, we should not assume that because the band is older now that they have lost their touch. Quite the opposite, in fact. I saw them last summer in Hannover, Germany and it was a brilliant show that had me losing my voice and my eyes tearing up. Not to mention that their last LP, plus their recently released acoustic album are both really great releases. Don't write these guys off yet... there's still plenty of gas in the tank!
