Only three days left to see our amazing life size replica of Rafflesia! #oxfordbotanicgarden #obgha #rafflesia #rafflesiaceae #conservatory #halfterm
Did not have a chance to see a tea rafflesia... but they had one mock up sculpture at the departure hall of Kuching International Airport!

Finally got to see myself the holoparasitic plant Rafflesia (Rafflesia lagascae)! #rafflesia #rafflesiaceae #mtmakiling
Hiked up Mt. Makiling earlier for this beautiful creature, Rafflesia lagascae! As seen on the left is the blooming and outsized but foul-smelling flower, with its cryptic coloration, while on the right are senescing flowers. Basic knowledge of plants does not only make you enjoy the beauty of nature, it also makes you learn about different species, their identity and be able to describe them! Seeing different forms and structures makes me high and insane!!!!! #botlove #botany #hikewithadifference #MtMakiling #Rafflesia #Rafflesiaceae
Rafflesia arnoldii with a potential pollinator. Rafflesia is the world's largest flower and smells particularly bad in hopes of luring flies to pollinating them. When not flowering the plants take up residence inside jungle vines living as a obligate parasite. Hopefully one day I'll see one in the flesh. Happy Darwin day! #rafflesia #rafflesiaceae #indonesia #botany #botanizing #penandink #sketchbook #drawing #linedrawing #stippling #instaart #artistsoninstagram #botanicalillustration #scientificillustration #diptera #fly #entomology #forestbiology #art #nature
Flower bud development can take up to more than a year for some of the larger species of Rafflesia. Despite this long developmental stage, the flowering period of each individual flower only lasts for a few days. This picture was taken 6 days after anthesis (when it first started blooming), and deterioration in the flower structure, colour, and form are already starting to be witnessed. #Rafflesia #RafflesiaTuanMudae #Rafflesiaceae #parasite #Borneo #borneoplants #borneoflora #Sarawak #Kuching #GunungGading #parasiticplant #tropicalrainforest #tropicalbotany #rainforest #nature #imabotanist #botany
I'm over the moon and am deeply privileged to have finally seen first hand one of the great botanical wonders of the world! A Rafflesia bloom - it is the largest flower in the world (with some species reaching more than 1 m in diameter!) and is an endo-holoparasite, that lives solely within its host (Tetrastigma sp. ; Vitaceae) until it is time to bloom. #Rafflesia #RafflesiaTuanMudae #Rafflesiaceae #parasite #Borneo #borneoplants #borneoflora #Sarawak #Kuching #GunungGading #parasiticplant #tropicalrainforest #tropicalbotany #rainforest #nature #imabotanist #botany
When life gets too heavy sometimes I find myself focusing most of my attention on the earth's magnificent beauty. Whether it's a good or bad way of coping with reality, I'm grateful the earth still holds totally radical beings that get me through tough times. Saw this fantastic beast today. Rafflesia keithii, a parasitic plant that takes at least nine months to bloom, can be up to 1 meter wide, and is endemic to the region of Sabah in Borneo. Totally. rad. day 🤘. #preserveourearth

Throwback selfie with Rafflesia speciosa. Not an easy feat ( as you can smell it 300 metres away) This is endemic to the islands of Negros and Panay. The only species of rafflesia to occur in two islands.it is only found in the Philippines. . . . . . #rafflesia #Rafflesiaceae #biodiversity #biodiversidad #naturephotography #nature #natural #beauty #beautiful #parasite #philippines #florafilipina
Rafflesia. The Corpse Flower. Parasitic flowering-plant. Difficult life. Die after flowering. #biggest #giant #noleaves #noroots #nostem #pot #misunderstood #life #ironic #today #1818 #rafflesiaceae #extinct #extinction
How bad do you wanna grow one of these in your backyard? Pretty crazy .... The critically endangered #Rafflesia arnoldii is a member of the genus Rafflesia in the family #Rafflesiaceae . It is noted for producing the largest individual flower (3 feet!) on earth. It has a very strong and horrible odour of decaying flesh, earning it the nickname "corpse flower". It is endemic to the rainforests of Sumatra and possibly Borneo. Although there are some plants with larger flowering organs like the titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) and talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera), those are technically clusters of many flowers. The flower grows to a diameter of around one meter (3 ft), but the greatest measurement from a reliable source is 105 centimeters (3.4 ft) for one at Palupah Nature Reserve near Bukittinggi, Sumatra. R. arnoldi weighs up to 11 kilograms (24 lb). These flowers emerge from very large, cabbage-like, maroon or magenta buds typically about 30 cm (12 in) wide, but the largest (and the largest flower bud ever recorded) found at Mount Sago, Sumatra in May 1956 was 43cm (17 in) in diameter. It lives as a parasite on several vines of the genus Tetrastigma , which grow only in primary (undisturbed) rainforests. Rafflesia lacks any observable leaves, stems or even roots, yet is still considered a vascular plant. Similar to fungi, individuals grow as thread-like strands of tissue completely embedded within and in intimate contact with surrounding host cells from which nutrients and water are obtained. This plant produces no leaves, stems or roots and does not have chlorophyll. It can only be seen when it is ready to reproduce. Perhaps the only part of Rafflesia that is identifiable as distinctly plant-like are the flowers; although, even these are unusual since they attain massive proportions, have a reddish-brown coloration and stink of rotting flesh. This scent attracts insects such as flies which then pollinate the rare plant. #pearlyeverlasting

It is distinct from all other species of Rafflesia in its small-sized #flowers , the upright perigone lobes, and prominently cream-white disk surface that is often devoid of processes. Its small-sized flowers, with an average diameter of 9.73 cm when fully expanded, make it the #smallest of the #largestflowers in the world. || #Conservation #ecology #holoparasitic #taxonomy #ParasiticPlant #CriticallyEndangered #BiodiversityHotspot #flower #flora J. The stunning #Rafflesia is the largest #flower in the world. We saw this one in #Borneo a few years ago now. It's a #genus of #parasitic #floweringplants which has no stems but has 5 gloriously coloured #petals Its supposed to smell like rotting flesh hence the nickname #corpseflower to attract insects, but I smelt no such smell. #Malaysia #plant #largeplant #Rafflesiaceae #rainforest #kotakinabalu #ig_naturepictures #Sabah #ilovesabah #orangeflower #redflower #nature #rareflower
