Today’s lunch 👉🏻 green and yellow. Yellow and green. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I had some leftover gnocchi from my dinna out at @chickadeerestaurant last night but not very much so I paired it with ✌🏻scrambled eggs and added a bowl of @traderjoes cruciferous crunch with honey mustard dressing yumm. 😋 Washed down with some @gtskombucha booch. The Gingerade is my fave. Fiber✔️ Protein✔️ Probiotics✔️ ____ What did you have for lunch today?
🐿🥜Trail snacks or squirrel food? Maybe both. When you’re going on long hikes or need a real high energy snack - this is a go-to (then again peanut butter anything is a go-to for me, hah). * 2 cups rolled oats * 2 cups pretzels, crushed down to 1 cup * 1 cup peanut butter (more if needed) * 1/2 cup honey (more if needed) * 1 teaspoon vanilla * 1/2 cup chopped almonds (or preferred almonds) >>>Mix together the oats, pretzels & chopped nuts. In a separate bowl mix together your preferred but butter, honey, & vanilla. Combine together & put onto a parchment lined baking pan & then into the freezer for about 20min. >>>Don’t forget as the summer temps rise ☀️🌡 keep salty snacks on hand and plenty of water! Don’t be one of those people who go and hike Camelback and get coptered 🚁 out because you weren’t prepared for the triple digit weather.

Have you heard of Lucky Iron Fish? This cute little guy is made from food grade electrolytic iron, and when used as directed (boiling for 10 minutes in 1 L of water with 2-3 drops of acidity) it will release 6-8 mg of bioavailable iron! Holy ravioli this dinner was 💯! Recipe was adapted from a meal I got from @hellofresh a few weeks back. I love getting meal ideas from them and recreating with my own spin ✨Sauce🍝= 4 large mushrooms, 1 shallot, heirloom tomatoes, pinch of chili flakes, dollop of sour cream, parsley, salt, pepper Sauté mushrooms and shallot in olive oil. Add tomatoes and chili flakes. Stir in sour cream and season with parsley, s&p. Add in some pasta water as needed #weeknightdinner #easymeals
🥣 Let’s talk about smoothie bowls. Who makes them? I rarely make smoothie bowls. It’s not because they’re not good for you, it’s because I don’t like to dirty extra dishes if I don’t have to. Putting Greek yogurt into a bowl, then loading it with lots of toppings is a perfect, quick meal in my opinion. And, I don’t need to clean my blender! There is definitely a reason to make a smoothie bowl, though, beyond its beauty. If you don’t like the taste or consistency of plain Greek yogurt, a smoothie bowl is a good option for you. Blending plain Greek yogurt with frozen fruit thins the consistency for those of you that don’t like it thick. It also blends sweetness in the every bite. If it’s still not sweet enough for you, you can use a flavored Greek yogurt such as vanilla or fruit flavor. One reason I’m such a big fan of Greek yogurt bowl’s — or smoothie bowls — is because of the balance of #macros . Cauliflower fried rice! 🍚 This is a super simple way to add veggies to a rice dish. Cauliflower rice is the sneakiest vegetable. This is great to try with picky eaters! . Ingredients: - Frozen bag of cauliflower rice - Eggs, scrambled - Brown rice - Firm tofu - Onion - Garlic . Announcement: I changed my podcast name to “Dietitian Boss” 🎧 . I’m celebrating a full year since I started my podcasting journey. You can find my podcast called “Dietitian Boss” on iTunes and Spotify. 🎤 In 2018, when I started my podcast, I had no launch strategy. My start with podcasting was just as messy as my start here on Instagram. I didn’t know the answers, but I just put myself out there and started the process! Your first podcast episode, Instagram post or even blog post won’t be “on brand,” but you gotta just start. . Flashback: When I first started podcasting I had no mic, and I didn’t edit anything😱. I took bold action and just uploaded my content without hesitation. I’m very grateful that I didn’t let excuses hold me back from having conversations with you and connecting with my audience on a deeper level. 💻 . In the past year, I focused my podcast name, guests, interview strategy, and even organization with podcasting. I overcame my limiting beliefs of feeling new and insecure in the podcasting world. . . Fast forward to 2019. I have a more structured system in place. I have a podcast virtual assistant who organizes my files, uploads episodes, edits sound, recaps my episodes, and sends out emails to my list to notify them when new episodes post. I’ve come a long way in 1 year. . Today, RDs don’t tell me that my first few episodes are disjointed. In fact, no one cares. They tell me that my episodes inspire them and help them overcome their limiting beliefs and that’s what matters most to me. I want to inspire you to take action and focus in your business so you can build your audience and convert leads into paying clients. . I now average 6k downloads a month, but I started with zero. I started with an unclear message, but I had a passion to connect that helped me grow relationships with so many of you, which is a rewarding experience for me as the podcast host.👏🏼 . Starting isn’t easy and I can relate to that. I’m here to show you that starting your brand doesn’t have to be “perfect.” You have to just start. It was actually one of those impromptu recipes inspired by what I had in the kitchen - tomatoes, spinach and shrimp 😍 these sautéed shrimp were BANGING and could be thrown over anything for a delicious and complete meal. The less personalized it is, the less reliable it will be for you! . . Hola friends, this is a hard concept to accept because honestly nothing sounds better than the pretty packaged deal of vitamins or nutrients or minerals or diet style that EVERYONE NEEDS! It’s packaged beautifully and has all the details of the ‘right and wrong things’ but to be honest the only person it’s really good for is the assembly line! Taking that approach equals: less critical thinking, less work and less analysis of the individual’s medical history... and ultimately, less results. . I get it though because as tempting as it is for the consumer it is for the provider! Vendors try to pitch this method to me all the time! This ‘bundle’ will take less work, less thought and more profit. And again, trust me, it sounds really nice. . However, despite taking the one size fits all approach over the last 20+ years, instead of helping the majority, it’s hardly fitting anyone. That’s because a person’s preference, medical history, culture, lifestyle.. those are the things that are truly driving lifestyle change (aka Results!) My suggestion: 1) take note of your top 3 biggest health struggles (write them down) 2) seek out a provider that seems to provide services to those specific issues 3) ask ahead of time prior to even scheduling a visit if you can speak to them in person or find out their counseling style (big red flag if it’s an AlaCart process) 4) as you do more research write down details in 2 different categories (one that separates trendy facts you read vs articles that seem really valid and worth discussing more about to your provider... don’t go off ‘hear say’!) 5) be cautious and protective of who you share your health goals and history with... this is the NUMBER 1 reason clients struggle sticking to a goal or start questioning themselves... because someone they know told them THIS worked for THEM. . Taking these tips and applying them to your individual health situation will help you separate the plan that’s right for you vs the plan that’s easily multiplied for mass profit but has little credibility to prove it’s worked for the ‘majority’ of users! 🧬💗🌿#nutrition #health

Even with this post, the first time I showed the idea to my coach, she immediately said "this would be better as a comparison photo." So I tried my first ever comparison photo and asked a colleague for feedback. What did I get? -the color was too dark -the caption was confusing -the photo on the right wasn't exaggerated enough -what message was I even trying to communicate?? Oof. It's hard to feel like everyone around you is cruising along while you feel like you're floundering. But we have to remember, someone is looking at us and thinking that we seem like WE'RE cruising along. And those people who we look at as having it 'all figured out'? Eat the rainbow! This tends to be a lot of dietitians recommendations - aiming to eat lots of colourful foods! The big reason: eating a variety of foods means you're getting the micronutrients your body and organs needs for proper function. Each colourful fruit or vegetable you're consuming has different vitamins and minerals that it will provide. But what about those with digestive health concerns? Like I mentioned in my previous post (and many of my colleagues echoed), it's important to listen to your body and have fruits and vegetables that work for you. For many individuals with IBS, they may also not be getting enough fibre into their diets due to fear of it causing increased gastrointestinal discomfort.. or, like many of my clients, they just don't find them that appealing! Let’s talk about food rules. Do you have a food rule, even a subconscious one? . I used to never get chips with my sandwich, mostly because they weren’t my fave, but also I just saw it as empty calories. And then I got pregnant and all I wanted was potatoes in ANY form 🥔😝 This made me think about other food rules I may be following without even realizing it. . This was my lunch the other day- leftover spaghetti 🍝 with @eatbanza pasta, not even in a proper bowl because who wants more dishes #momlife I also had this for dinner the night before. . What’s missing? Nothing! Sure, I could have added a salad 🥗 for some veggies. I normally do! But I’ve had a lot of salads lately and didn’t want a salad either time. 🏋🏻‍♀️Day one of my new commitment to strength training! It’s been well over a year since I’ve been consistent, but thanks to my brilliant husband, I get my own personalized program 😆⁣ ⁣ Never in my younger days as a dancer would I have thought I’d be interested in weight lifting. It’s intimidating, challenging, and there’s no choreography involved 💃🏻 BUT @cmduke22 has given me the confidence to get under the bar once again despite my bad knees and postpartum body. To me, strength training means more than improving my aesthetics. It means showing my son what it looks like to take care of your body. It is a way to help prevent injury and slow aging. It’s a way to combat everyday stressed and depressed feelings (which are very common postpartum). It’s a way to make sure I’m strong enough to carry my big boy around and hold him as long as he wants me to. After I work out, the stresses of the day seem smaller, and my tasks ahead feel more doable and fun. I love exercise and am so thankful for our garage gym!⁣ ⁣ Also- got to give a brag on my husband. He is a nationally certified strength and conditioning specialist with a focus on collegiate basketball athletes. He has a masters degree in sports physiology (graduated with an almost perfect GPA), and continues to constantly learn and explore his field. In my observations, strength and conditioning coaches tend to be unappreciated, misunderstood, and underpaid. I respect Cody so much for his expertise and love watching him work! 🥰 💪
I know from listening to a lot of my clients that signing on to what your treatment team asks you to do is terrifying and feels like it requires more faith than you can possibly muster at times. Part of that overwhelm is the idea that trusting in the treatment plan right now means agreeing to it for the rest of your life. Of course we want recovery for you in the long term and the rest of your life, but all that we ask is that each day when you wake up you focus on today. Choose recovery today. Choose to follow what you need to today.

Have you found that people really really like to categorize you and the way that you eat? As a dietitian, I think I'm particularly prone to dietary scrutiny. * A typical convo looks something like this: "Are you vegetarian?" "No, I eat fish, eggs, and the occasional (grass-fed, organic) red meat.” "So you eat meat but you don't eat chicken?" "Nope...personal preference." 🤢 "Bacon?" "No, not that either." "What about dairy?" "No, I'm allergic, but I can get away with a little butter." "What about gluten?" "It makes my allergies worse, but technically I could eat it." “So you’re vegetarian?” “No, see above.” "Oh, so are you paleo?" "No, I eat grains & legumes." [insert silent confused nod here, or the occasional "oh man, it sucks you can't eat cheese."] 🤣 * I don’t know how to define my diet other than to say I eat mostly whole foods, mostly plants. But that way of eating doesn’t have a trendy name or a tribe of followers. 🤔 * First off, why are people so concerned with putting people's diets into a neat little box? I can say it would sure make my marketing easier. I'll tag one meal with the vegan or plantbased hashtag, and then lose a bunch of followers the next time I tag a meal paleo. 🤷🏻‍♀️ * I've always been an outsider, I guess...too smart to hang with the cool kids, too "normal" to hang with the nerds in school. I've always lived my life differently and eaten differently from the people around me. I don't believe in labels, and I don't see the need to *define* everything. What's up with that? What’s your fave toast topping? 🥜🍞🍯⁣ @no.food.rules 🔛 @registereddietitianapproved ⁣ ⁣ Let me know in the comments!👇👇👇⁣ ⁣ I’ve LOVED peanut butter toast for my entire life😍, but for 6 years, when my strict food rules dictated all of my food choices, I wouldn’t touch the combo with a 10 foot pole. 🙅‍♀️My rules told me that I couldn’t eat two “bad” foods at the same time, which to me was anything high in carbs (bread🍞)or calories (peanut butter🥜). I felt sad and frustrated each weekend when my boyfriend (now hubs) Joe and I would make brunch and I had to eat my toast naked- the toast, not me!😉⁣ ⁣ How boring, right? After saying no to Joe when he asked if I wanted PB for my toast for the one millionth time (when I actually DID😫) I decided that enough was enough. I wanted to enjoy the foods I loved again, WITHOUT feeling stressed or anxious. I started slowly, adding a light spread of PB goodness to half of the toast, then all, then a thicker spread, until I was able to eat the amount that satisfied me. Let’s talk about food testing. 👀 It is just me or are food sensitivity test kits popping up all over the place?? 👩🏻‍🔬 Unfortunately a lot of tests can end up being a waste of your hard-earned money. . . ❌ Run away from ELISA or ALCAT or any other IgG blood test for food sensitivities. A positive test indicates your immune system is just going about its NORMAL business to help you tolerate foods you are exposed to...it DOES NOT necessarily mean you have problems with the food. If you get this test, you will likely be told to avoid a ton of foods, usually wheat, eggs, dairy, corn, soy, etc (because there are so many false positives). . . ✅ The Mediator Release Test is (in my opinion) currently our best option for looking at food sensitivities. Instead of measuring antibodies, it measures your body’s inflammatory reaction to foods. It doesn’t tell us exactly which immune pathway is being activated, but it’s better for zeroing in on which foods are actually causing symptoms. Protocol involves only consuming tested foods you didn’t react to for a few weeks, slowly introducing untested foods, addressing underlying issues and eventually challenging the reactive foods. . . Please note neither of these are pointing to true ALLERGIES (look for a post in the near future about the difference between allergies and sensitivities). . . Just as a reminder, this is not a substitute for medical advice. Diet culture programs us to think that if we are not pursuing thinness we really aren’t serious about our health. FALSE. Dieting and restricting your intake is a form of stress on your body, it isn’t actually taking care of anything. ⠀ ⠀ Feeling uncomfortable in your body is totally normal. Honor that. Even if you are uncomfortable you still deserve to eat, rest and do other tasks that help your physical and mental health. Dieting just isn’t one of them. ⠀ ⠀ If you are having a difficult body image day today, you are not alone, and you can choose not to react through the harm of restricting or over exercising.⠀ ⠀ Take care my friend! I read this quote in a book the other day and it hit home! It’s referring to how when people feel SO strongly about their opinions, they state them as if they’re facts. Who else can think of a time they’ve seen complete scientific nonsense spouted by someone with strong confidence but no evidence? And people believe it? 🤭 It immediately made me think of how nutrition trends become so explosive in the media, and how science is warped to fit the demands of the people. It’s sad to see people struggling with what to believe when registered dietitians’ voices can’t be heard over the madness. It’s easier to listen to a strongly stated opinion (that’s often shrouded in diet culture & usually from someone with zero credibility) than to the facts rooted in evidence-based research. 📈Advocating for the profession is one way to help stop this. When you have the opportunity to explain what you do, your education and your credentials, take advantage of it! Why is this salad different from all the other salads? 😂🥗Swipe 👉🏻👉🏻 because it was served with oven fried Passover chicken, double coated for double crisp. ✨Pomegranate Pistachio Cauliflower Salad✨ {@ottolenghi inspired} recipe with ✨short cuts✨ below.. {DM for crisp chx details🍗}. . . 1️⃣Roast the cauliflower— combine two prewashed/chopped packages of cauliflower (10 oz each) with 1 tablespoon olive oil, sprinkle of salt and pepper; bake for 30 min at 400 degrees 2️⃣Layer up- 4 cups mixed greens, roasted cauliflower, 1 cup pomegranate seeds (I used a snack pack of seeds ready to go!), 1/2 cup roasted pistachios and and 1/2 cup flat leaf parsley 3️⃣Dress it up- whisk together juice of 1 lemon, two tablespoons olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper and 1/2 teaspoon cumin. I’ve been doing a lot of reading on body image recently, especially as it relates to being in a black body. 👧🏽 👩🏾‍⚕️ 👨🏿‍⚕️ Not surprisingly, in the scientific community body image is largely based on the experience of middle-class, white women. AKA not me. While I can relate to the desire for thinness. There’s added vigilance of how others perceive me: hair, body shape, skin tone, tone of voice, speech patterns. Even if science hasn’t caught up, your body and self image struggles are valid. 🧪 🧬 Now you’re probably thinking Christyna, you’re a dietitian. What does this have to do with anything? That’s easy: part of me existing in diet culture is trying diligently to exist “peacefully” in the dominant culture. Which is difficult to do. Ultimately, I can’t fight my genetics. The jury is out on whether we can exist peacefully. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 🤷🏽‍♀️ So for all my lovely black and brown folx, how is controlling what you eat giving you access to the dominant culture? For my less melaninated friends, how are you perceiving bodies of color? Are you countering them against the “standard” of thin, fair, and straight hair? If so, what does that tell you?

Lately, I've been focusing on trying to get more serves of vegetables into my day. Stir-fries are an excellent way of experimenting with different flavours and ingredients: you can make them vegetarian or vegan; you can use myriad vegetables, legumes and pulses, and seasonings; and it's difficult to mess them up! They're also incredibly easy to make, and a great meal idea when you're tired or time-poor.
