An overwhelming amount of colours, smells and sounds enveloped us as we explored Delhi 🌿🕌 albeit very confronting when we first arrived, it was amazing to see so much more of this beautiful city today. I’d like to say I came for the culture, but really it was for the food 😉
The Red Fort was built by the Mughal Empire in the 17th century. At their peak they ruled basically all of India and parts of Afghanistan, one of the largest empires in the world. Historians estimated that they made up about 23% of the entire world’s GDP, higher than all of Europe combined.
They were established by the Timurids, who claimed to be a direct descendant of Genghis Khan (though who isn’t related to him)
Even though most of the marble and gold statues were destroyed or stolen by the British and it’s now just really a mosque I was still geeking out hard. I took multiple middle eastern and Indian history classes in college, including one on the Mughal empire specifically 🤓
