//The grand deception of this dunya is that it sometimes feels so long. Some days seem to drag on, pulling your patience like a piece of chewed gum that’s about to snap. .
We count down to things. We cross days out on a calendar until the day we’re waiting for finally arrives. Sometimes we view the days, months, or years between us and our goals as “extra,” irrelevant, or as barriers between us and success. .
But the days we cross out, the weeks we can’t wait to be over, the moments that seem to go on for hours - this is what makes up our life. The Middle Stuff mostly, not just the special occasions. The Middle Stuff, the “nothing” moments, the fillers… we set them aside and assign zero importance to them. .
But at the end of time, when we are standing before God and we are asked, “how long did you spend on earth?” we’ll say, “a day or part of a day.” The dunya is so very short. We don’t quite understand it because of the days that seem to drag on. But we have to lift ourselves out of the obliviousness that makes us ungrateful for every minute we have. .
Minutes are what we’ll wish we had more of when our souls are lifted from our bodies. Minutes to pray or say kind words or give in charity or breathe in the blessings of God. Minutes will be worth more than anything we ever possessed. There are no “fillers” in our day. Just invaluable time we’ve used either wisely or unwisely.
