Today, my Roane Ranger turns 6 years old! We rescued this little West Virginian when he was only 6/7 weeks old.
Even though he gives off
very harsh resentment vibes towards us.. I love him dearly and wouldn’t change a thing!
Congrats to HCRS Members Katie Scheip & Mike Winters along with HC STAR Team Members Tyler Upton and Ben Applebome for completing the NC Mountain Rescue Alpine Specialist Awareness Course this weekend!
This course is designed for back country responders to SAR and Law Enforcement emergencies in remote wilderness environments. Emphasis is on safety, survival, and operational effectiveness during remote rescue operations in North Carolina in severe winter environments.
Topics covered in this course include: Survival and winter shelters, Introduction to Lightweight rescue equipment, Introduction to hazardous terrain crossings in winter/alpine conditions, Basic wilderness medical operations, Basic knots, and Basic hauls and belay systems.
All of this while braving whatever Mother Nature throws at you! And this weekend was a good one for that! 💨❄️🌨☃️

Earlier today, the crew of RS741B removed a 10-year old girl whose leg was trapped in between steel cattle bars. The crew used hydraulic spreaders to gain approximately 1” of additional space to free the patient’s leg. MCFRS Engine 707 crew also assisted on the rescue. #rescuesquad#bccrs#snowday#winter#entrapment
We are commonly called to interstate accidents at all times of the day. Additionally, our members take part in specialized emergency vehicle drivers training before they are allowed to respond on emergencies.
If you're driving and see our members on scene or any other emergency vehicles, please make effort to steer clear and/or change lanes if possible.

Thanks @rob_wig for sharing this photo. Necessity is the mother of invention. Not every crew has access to the key boxes on apartment/condo complexes. Here's an example of tools currently being carried in the field... Bulky, disjointed, and now outdated.

Our rescue members were busy at work this morning responding to four calls for service. The first of the night was out on Irvine Road. The following three were dispatched on Interstate 75.
There is still a forecast of a wintry mix later on today. Please be careful on the roads.
