When I am looking at references for projects I find myself consistently looking at documentary photographers from a compositional standpoint but also for the fleeting moments of natural lighting that we often have to artificially create for longer scenes. The photographer I find myself returning to again and again is Bruce Davidson, the best way I could describe why is the ‘humanity’ of his gaze. There is a compassion to the way he shoots his subjects never mocking or moralising but ‘with them’. In his iconic Brooklyn Gang project, which is a key reference for me on the feature I’m doing at the moment, he takes a subject that was being treated with fear and moral panic by the tabloids at the time and sees these teenagers for who they really were.
I love to romanticise the idea of being a documentary stills photographer but the truth is that it is something that I just could never really get in to or have the drive for and I think it’s for the same reason I enjoy being a cinematographer - I thrive on collaborating with others. It sometimes makes me self conscious that I don’t take as many stills as other cinematographers seem to but it just doesn’t give me that satisfaction - I love the discussion on a frame and it’s intent with a director and I welcome opinions from anyone in my team or other collaborators on the film. When I was doing my first college course and learning still photography I just felt lonely working by myself…
So for now I have my growing collection of photography reference books to inspire that part of me, who knows maybe in time I’ll develop the habit for in the years to come….. #cinematography #research #photography #filmmaking #brooklyn

What two days worth of presentations and updates looks like* heading into the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Advisory Committee meeting webinar tomorrow. (*Two-sided printing—could have been worse.😉)
I cannot concentrate well enough to hold a job, but I’m going to give it my all to try to follow the information presented regarding the state of ME/CFS here in the US. I will crash from the mental exertion of following the audio. Hopefully not too badly. Hopefully not before my public commentary on day one some time around 1:20-30 EDT.
There will be many like me—sick people who have been trying to hold the government accountable for years of inaction—struggling to understand two days of information. Wish us luck. Or, better yet, join us—even if only for the public commentary.
Meeting agenda and dial-in instructions at https://www.hhs.gov/ash/advisory-committees/cfsac/meetings/2018-06-20/index.html (link temporarily in profile).
ME/CFS—or simply ME—is a devastating multi-system disease that causes dysfunction of the neurological, immune, endocrine, and energy metabolism systems.

At the heart of power! Or at least the Finnish House of Parliament! Today we had the privilege for an audience with the research-network of parliament to discuss how the project & platform @tutkitusti
might be useful for connecting parliamentarians with scholarship. Much promise, I am happy to report - and it was great to introduce the project that has shaped up so nicely. Thus thanks team & advisory board and collaborators - shout out to @antroblogi @politiikasta @versuslehti @julkea_tiede_ @katsomukset
and many more - looking forward to seeing where this may lead us! #research #publishing

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Brain Initiative, or IEEE Brain, launched a newly developed web presence to engage the scientific community in an effort to strategize scientific and engineering approaches for future effective human-artificial intelligence teaming. The mission of IEEE Brain is to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration and coordination to advance research, standardization and development of technologies in neuroscience to help improve the human condition. "Trends towards increasingly effective intelligent technologies, novel approaches to integrate humans and intelligent technologies, and increased resolution to understand and predict human behavior underlie projections of a future where human and intelligent agents join together to enable team functionality far surpassing today's capabilities," said Dr. Arwen Decostanza, ARL researcher. Very simply, "grandiosity" means you have larger fantasies and wishes for yourself than your real life experience can support, so either they make you manic, running around trying to keep up with their demands, or they make you depressed because your desires are so high and unachievable that it soon seems useless to try to do anything at all.
When someone treats you like a human being and does not worship you, to the extent that you are overidentified consciously or unconsciously with a grandiose exhibitionistic self-organisation, you will have a rage response and a "grandiose retreat" into isolation.
I hate to disturb anyone's good day, but a really humble person may be having more trouble with grandiosity than someone who thinks they're pretty hot stuff. If you get depressed a lot because you think you are worthless, it indicates a mighty struggle with this little god within.
Remember, there is no such thing as a person who has completely transformed his or her own narcissism. There are only people who acknowledge their grandiose energies and try to learn how to realte to them consciously and regulate and optimize their contacts with them intelligently.
There is such thing as humility, however, and we must learn the true humility that consists of two things: (a) knowing your limitations and (b) getting the help you need. That is all humility is. It has nothing to do with any ascetic personal style or with self-effacing. It is simply knowing your limitations.
The greatest antidote to pathological narcissism is a realtionship with a real person.
