37 Oaks = Retail + Innovation + Economic Development
For the past 12 weeks, 37 Oaks has been working with a group of amazingly talented Austin (Chicago) based youth.
We have been leading the strategy and execution of an innovative retail prototype that is based on a cooperative business model.
From a business side, this curriculum cultivates local young business owners; encourages economic empowerment; creates jobs and strengthens local retail businesses.
One quote we often use in class is that “We aren’t just selling cookies!” Westside Health Authority ‘s Good Neighbor Campaign is at the core of this business. This means the Austin community is at the heart of this business and so is Demetrius Brooks - the Fellow’s Community and Leadership Advisor and Mentor.
So we appreciate the forward thinking of WHA for creating this program, offering this support to our youth and for involving 37 Oaks in the process.
So join us on December 29th to celebrate the Fellows graduation from phase 1 and support the the official launch of this innovative retail business.

Let’s be honest with ourselves. It’s likely that your main competitor this holiday season is not the store down the street, but Amazon. And they guarantee free two-day shipping. Added shipping costs is one of the biggest reasons for people abandoning their carts online. It’s now an expectation for many industries.
Offering free shipping, even just during the holidays, may not be practical for you. That’s pretty common. In your situation, we recommend to:
1) Make it very clear that you offer free in-store pickup to local customers.
2) Offer free shipping only during a short promotion window. This at least gives you a surge in online sales that you might otherwise not have without it.
15 days till Christmas...almost there. Stay strong 💪
While the holidays are the peak time of year for retailers, it often creates a nagging sense of “I could be doing more” – better marketing, smarter inventory control, generating more online sales. You want to squeeze the most out of the shopping season, but it’s difficult to hit on strategies that work, that rise above the noise – strategies that don’t ultimately waste your time and money.

Home stretch of Q4. This is not the time to put on auto-pilot and "get whatever else out of it you can.” This is the time to make every intentional move you can to ensure this is your most successful holiday season yet.
I see 2 big mistakes over and over again:
1. Retailers wait too long to begin a markdown strategy and end up taking a huge cut in January. Pay close attention to your sell-thru and begin to mark down pieces that aren't moving... you have bargain shoppers that WILL buy if the choices are there.
2. This is tied to successful mark-downs: Keep your inventory fresh. Make sure you have new goods coming in through Christmas. Send emails or retargeting campaigns to your customers showing off the newest arrivals.
I hope this season is and will continue to go well for you.
Planning for your Friday evening - you look up a restaurant recommended by a friend. You check reviews, you look up the website to view the menu, plug in the address for directions...and then...you show up.
Everything you experience, what you see, hear, taste and feel about your visit is part of what that business NEEDS to know to improve their process and overall client experience in order to grow and thrive.

For so long I held back. I didn’t live fully as who I was meant to be.
I listened to the fear.
I listened to the self-doubt.
I believed I wasn’t good enough. Smart enough. Skilled enough.
And then one day I said enough.
I showed up in my business.
I made hard decisions.
I got to work.
And it was the most beautiful, painful transformation.

Cyber Monday. I hope your online sales are booming today and that your hard work is paying off. Remember, your online sales should drive in-store traffic. Have in-store pickup options? Consider adding a discount to be used in-store on their day of pickup... the goal is to increase revenue and incentivize your customers to shop instead of going straight to counter and back to their car. Even if you don’t, use your emails from local orders to reengage with your new arrivals as Christmas gets closer. No matter how your site drives traffic in store, I hope you’re crushing it this season!
You ever work sooo hard on something because you know it’s apart of a purpose and a vision?
Well... Last year, we launched SOKONI (a sub brand of 37 Oaks). This year we took all the learnings and were committed to evolving it into something better.
Not just because we wanted a cool place to sell product, but because our innovative platform has economic development at its CORE. If you know anything about 37 Oaks, you now that’s important.
This week was a big damn deal and we are happy with the outcome. - ABC channel 7 came out to cover Sokoni
- Mayor of Matteson, IL and many other elected officials stopped by to support ALL the businesses - Customers came from Matteson, surrounding neighborhoods, the city and Western suburbs!! - Over 25 small business were exposed to and purchased by large crowds. - Successful partnership with Workforce Development Org on training & development for management positions in the retail sector.
-E-commerce platform to support Pop Up (omnichannel) - Store experience was amazing!! Space design, music, food, scents, etc
Of course there were new learnings, and as we grow and scale, and we will apply them to next year.
Although Sokoni doesn’t close until December 23rd (stop by between Thurs- Sun from 11-7 or visit SokoniStore.com), we felt it’s a must to stop, and give a big thank you to our team, partners, supporters and vendors.
It take a “whole lot” to pull this off, more than people think. So without them, it would not have happened!! So THANK YOU!!! (Check our the website for a portion of this list 😊 sokonistore.com/Matteson)
Onward and upward!! Stay tuned. #shopsokoni #sokonistore #economicdevelopment #matteson #cre #commercialrealestate #smallbusinessowner #smallbusinessowners #retailinnovation #retailinnovations #retailconsultant #retailconsulting #retailstrategy #37oaks
At age 23, overweight and a smoker, Patti Catalano decided to start running. Embarrassed of her weight, she practiced alone in cemeteries. Within a year, she won her first of five Ocean State Marathons in Rhode Island in a time of 2:53:40. She won four consecutive Honolulu Marathons (1978-1981). She held the world record for five miles, 10K, 20K, half marathon and 30K and American records for15K and the marathon. She was the first American female runner to run under 2:30 for the marathon, and she set the American marathon record three times (1980 Montreal 2:30:57, 1980 New York City 2:29:33 and 1981 Boston 2:27:51).
