This was a lesson in English during my 11th std. It compared the capital punishment v/s life imprisonment. This blog is just my share of its gist.
In that lesson, the writer speaks about the pros and cons of both the types of punishments: capital punishment, where there is no place for mercy, just a cruel death. On the other hand, the lifetime punishment-where a person is allowed to die living in a confinement. Finally, they say and prove in the lesson that lifetime punishment is better, and so do I believe... Often it is said that loneliness kills. Yes,it is the biggest enemy one can ever have. You are completely cut out of the world you have been living in, you have nothing to enjoy. Initially it may not sound that bad, but as the time rolls, it asks you to pay heavily-it makes you forget yourself, whatever you have been. Isn't it? But again, that is not permanent. Slowly but steadily, you get along to that situation.
The protagonist in "The Bet" challenges his friend that lifetime punishment is rather a much better way than the capital punishment and volunteers himself for it. He bets to stay confined without any human contact for a certain number of years for a certain prize money. But he chooses to elope the day before challenge duration ends as he had gained much more than what the prize money of the bet had been - WISDOM. During his punishment days - 15 years, he undergoes a series of roller coaster rides emotionally - he was cut from the whole world, absolutely no contacts with any figure of life, but was fed regularly and had a good accommodation. Later he started getting into all types of books, dwelt more on spirituality and so on... What basically lies here is the fact that in case of lifetime punishment, though though its purpose is punishment, one learns a lot from it- they are trained to be better human beings, they are taught a thing or two about life, in exceptionally good cases they feel they have touched the wisdom; and learn that a life gifted by God to you was worth living. On the other hand in capital
