In September, while in a northbound Uber going home from work up the Westside Highway, I got stuck in some rotten traffic. I was staring at my phone the entire drive, not paying any attention to where I was until the car had stopped moving.
When I looked out the window to determine just how long it was going to take for me to get home, I became aware of a whole section of Riverside Park that I’d never seen before. The view was a total surprise- paths and tunnels and bridges and trees and hills that were completely unfamiliar to me. It was beautiful, as Riverside Park always is; but it was much more special because it was all new to me. It was like a dream, although it definitely wasn’t.
It’s crazy because I’ve lived on the Upper West Side for over fifteen years, and I’ve traveled that route a million times. Crazier still that ever since discovering that spot, I’ve been unable to find it again.
Now when I’m riding uptown, I watch vigilantly the landscape on the right the entire trip, desperately hoping to return to that secret place.
Where did it go?
