Road trip hitting some of the Tour De France infamous Cols. Day 1
Col d'Aubisque is one of the legendary climbs of the Tour de France, having been climbed on over forty occasions.
As well as being an important climb in the history of professional cycling, Col d'Aubisque is stunningly beautiful. The ascent from Laruns offers incredible views into the valley as well as towards the high peaks which comprise the border between France and Spain. It is also the tougher side to climb from Laruns with high gradients marking it out as one of the toughest in the Pyrenees.
The road out of Laruns is smooth and a gentle gradient to kick start the ascent. Putting you in a false sense of complacent... hitting the climb hard here will only end badly as many of the top riders in the Tour have experienced. As you climb passed the ski station at Gourette the climbs really opens up and the scenery really opens up. Stunning cliff drops to the valley below, plus views of the ever higher road that beacons to the summit.
All in all a tremendous climb and iconic, therefore a must if you’re in the region. Today a little bit of research to locate another legendary climb. .
