85# “Gwen”: Clean & Jerk 15-12-9 (unbroken reps)
Many of you have noticed my new love of Olympic lifting and calisthenics over the last year or so 🏋🏽♀️
You can only focus on aesthetics for so long before it feels one dimensional.
I’ve always incorporated functional training for long-term health and never focus solely on “aesthetic fitness” (you want to think about your internal health and not just external beauty, they go hand in hand anyway), but in all honesty I used to avoid things I wanted to do like Olympic lift or handstands because of how they “make your waist thick” 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I’m still training hard for canadian_national_proqualifier but I’m finding BALANCE with also training my abilities along with my aesthetics; not to mention mental variety and challenge keeps me passionate about the gym and my fitness. There’s nothing like trying to master something new to reinvigorate your drive.
I always feel the need to try something new and step up my game in various areas of my life 🤗
Yesterday I had my first real crossfit experience with “Gwen” (Clean & Jerk 15-12-9) in approx 11min. I forgot to watch the time because even counting the reps at that exertion level was all my mind could multi-task.
All I can say is what a great workout, with a great coach and community! Fist bumps and high fives are inevitable, and a hell of a lot of smiles in between panting grunts.
Yoga, functional training, Olympic lifting and bodybuilding are still my main loves... but calisthenics, handstands, and Crossfit are fun add-ons I may slip in once or twice a week just to spice things up 🌶👍

What have you done lately to improve your health?
🏋🏻♀️🚴🏽♂️🏌️♂️Exercising through a minor sports injury can exacerbate the issue resulting in major pain and injuries down the line. In addition, pain during activity may cause you to alter the way you exercise, putting improper stress on other areas of the body and leading to compensation injuries. What starts out as a sore ankle can lead to problems in the knee, hip or lower back; soreness down the arm can contribute to injuries in the shoulder, upper back and neck.
⚠️Seeking early intervention can prevent your strain or sprain from leading to a tear or fracture, and improve mobility and range of motion for proper and complete healing.

[PAIN SENSITIVITY VS. TISSUE DAMAGE]
The nervous system is like Pepperidge Farm…it remembers.
Sometimes a better way of thinking about pain when it persists after an injury is to think of it as sensitivity. When our body gets hurt, we become sensitive to certain stimuli because the nervous system is trying to protect us.
This is great when we first get injured because it alerts us to prevent subsequent harm but not so great when our tissue is healed. It's normal to have some sensitivity when coming back from an injury. After all, our brain is just trying to protect us.
However, after a certain time frame, we know that our tissues/muscles have healed. In these scenarios, we should not relate hurt to harm but instead to sensitivity. You can work around sensitivity by gradually re-introducing activities in varied intensities that once provided discomfort.
You're not broken and as long as you are living…your body does a stellar job at adapting

What else can I do to recover postpartum?
Instrument assisted soft-tissue mobilization may be a mouthful, however, it's a therapy that can help get your muscles and joints moving more freely!
We have talked about diaphragm breathing a lot on our account and for good reason, it is that important! Re-learning diaphragm breathing however can be difficult as most people through adulthood have shifted into chest breathing most likely due to a lack of core engagement and excessive sitting over the years.
Chest breathing is structurally less ideal and leaves the spine vulnerable to injury. When you do something physically for long enough your body forms support systems to maintain those habits for better or for worse.
So in the case of diaphragm breathing sometimes we need to help release the intercostal muscles/fascia (muscle and connective tissue between ribs) as well parts of the diaphragm itself in order to help facilitate this proper breathing pattern. Once we can breathe more efficiently with our diaphragm we can reap the benefits of it like more support for our spine, improved circulation and healing of abdominal and pelvic organs, improved digestion, and healthier discs within your spinal column!

ISSUES with your TISSUES?
How you perform an exercise can be causing or contributing to your pain. The upper traps tend to be irritable for many of us (posture, stress, etc) but if you add excess strain by allowing your elbows to point back when doing barbell lunges (top photo) or bend your neck back with stiff leg deadlifts (middle pic) the muscles may revolt and leave you yearning for relief. Bottom pic is corrected neck position for stiff leg deadlifts.
We all should check our technique. @lana_clayton

After some soft tissue work (cupping and dry needling) to calm everything down, #Rocktape
to keep that window open longer, and corrective exercises to restore movement and function she’s feeling much better. 😊
Addressing symptoms without addressing the cause will make the client dependent on treatment. At PT2U it’s about educating and empowering the client so they can self manage. •

Are you the first one to look for a chair at the picnic? If chairs run out in the room would you stand for hours rather than sit without a back rest? That used to be me and that still is a lot of people in this world. My back and hips would hurt so badly sitting from the ground that I would avoid it like the plague. This is oversimplified, sure. By no means am I saying hip restriction is the only reason someone might feel uncomfortable sitting from the floor, but if your hips are tight this task will surely feel uncomfortable.
It’s simple really, a certain amount of hip flexion and rotation are required to position yourself in a seated position from the ground. When it’s lacking, guess where the body will find the extra range of motion... your spine. Ya that’s probably going to hurt after a while.
Very specific advice today, but it hit me as I was sitting on the ground that there was a point in my life that I would have avoided these positions at all costs. That’s freedom of movement, freedom from apprehension, freedom to live life pain free. Freedom feels good.
