Pan-Asian deliciousness last night at Departure, on the 15th floor of the old Meier & Frank building near Pioneer Square. (It doesn't look like there are 15 floors. Did they skip some? Does Portland have 15-story buildings? [Besides US Bank]) (1) Round 1: Madame Cheng (tequila) with coconut ash, which makes it look black. The ice cube has the kanji for "departed" on it. The white one is Ittan-Momen, a tom kha vodka cocktail. (2) Kampachi sashimi with rhubarb, strawberries, cucumer, shiso. I could eat this until the cows come home. And then... (3) I'd have to eat this tender, juicy harami-beef skirt steak with black sesame skewer. (4) Round 2: The Dream of Akinosuke (gin) and Tale of Sang Thong (cognac, rum). (5) Miso scallops, asparagus, peas, yuzu, chili. (6) Chili prawns that earned their name, with pineapple, peanut, shiitake, and lotsa heat. (Our only disappointment of the evening was that this only had three shrimp.) (7) We really didn't need dessert, but I'm on vacation, so... chocolate ganache with caramelized coconut, banana, peanut, smoked chili... (8) And(!!)... Berry and rhubarb tart with coconut curd, rhubarb sorbet, smoked coconut cream. (9) The restaurant has a spaceship vibe. I couldn't decide if the ladies' room reminded me more of a submarine or Star Trek Enterprise.
