Continuing the theme of sunsets in Aultbea but this time with something more chilled. Long exposure photography isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I do love practicing stripping back a photo to just a few items. #longexposure #longexposureshots #sonyalpha #scotlandhighlands #hiddenscotland #aultbea #scotlandsmagazine #amateurphotography #landscapephotography #cokinfilters #minimalism
Rosie retouched! Somehow although version 1 looked like a puppy, I just felt that it wasn’t quite Rosie and played around for another hour. I like this version better. How about my critics? Is version 1 better or is this? #peeblesshire #peebles #artist #scottishartist #art #scottishart #dogs #puppies #labrador #labradorretriever #scotlandsmagazine #tweeddale
A bit of social history for interest - the photo shows a “Swill” not a modern one, but one made by Charlie Airey of Storth in what was Westmorland. A swill is an Ash basket and Charlie’s tools dated back to the 1700s. The tankard was Charlie’s father’s Christening tankard, Richard Airey. Charlie and my Dad were good friends and Charlie has no children to leave it to. His daughter was a nurse on a ship in convoy to Canada when it was sunk by a u-boat during WW2. Sadly his daughter was killed. I think of Charlie every time I use it and I use it often. I knew Charlie as well, we used to play dominoes in the Ship at Sandside. For interest, we all used snuff in those days. Mine was Doctor Romney’s Plus. They made tonnes of snuff in Kendal. #westmoreland #kendal #swills #charlieairey #artist #scottishartist #peebles #peeblesshire #cumbria #lakedistrict #lakedistricthistory #scotlandsmagazine
Rosie at 12 weeks - the not so scary box and 2 a glass of red wine to relax! That’s me of course and not Rosie. #peebles #scottishartist #labradorretriever #labrador #scottishborders #dogs #scotlandsmagazine #peeblesshire #cloudberryflowers
Neidpath Castle - Oil on canvas 15” x 11” Work in progress. Difficult to beat: sun streaming into the studio, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and others playing in the background. I love using Terry Harrison tree, texture and special effects brushes for foliage. Plenty of work left to do yet but it is starting to come. #art #oilpainting #scotlandsmagazine #cloudberryflowers #neidpathcastle #peebles #scottishcastles #peeblesshire #scottishart #scottishartist #scotland #oiloncanvas
Two weeks today - well I’m painting again as you can see and it’s great to see a few likes against my latest post. However, Rosie still takes up a lot of time. She is now a rogue, she knows right from wrong but plays the “you can’t catch me” game. We have to watch her all the time. #labradorretriever #labrador #dogs #art #artist #scottishart #scottishsrtist #peeblesshire #peebles #scottishborders #scotlandsmagazine #cloudberryflowers
What is Rosie so interested in? - it’s the TV! I was going to be painting again this week. I have all these ideas in my head that are bursting to be splashed across a canvas. But no, I’ve had a few half hearted starts, why isn’t it happening? Rosie! Looking after an energetic and now mischievous puppy is almost a full time occupation as she tries to eat the flowers in the garden, nibbles at furniture and puts front paws down and bottom up prior to chasing around and thinking if not actually saying it - catch me if you can. Last night was only night 6 and she is only 9 weeks old but now we are all sleeping and she is pretty well house trained now. #dogs #labrador #labradorretriever #scottishartist #peeblesshire #scotlandsmagazine #peebles
An update on Rosie - last night was Rosie’s third night. From the first instance she made herself at home and she seems very clever. Already she is almost house trained and there have been no accidents for two days. Thankfully, she is also settling more to sleeping in her crate. She loves sleeping as shown and the crate obviously wasn’t what she was going to put up with. How can a little dog produce so much noise! First night, all night howls, growls, high pitched barks and yells. Four hours sleep. Second night six hours sleep, but last night only 30 minutes protest after being sent to bed. During the day butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth. #peeblesshire #scotlandsmagazine #scottishartist #scottishborders #dog #labradorretriever #labrador
A 12” vase in Ash - I love the texture, grain and patina that can be brought to life in wood. #woodart #artist #woodturning #art #peebles #peeblesshire #scotlandsmagazine #scottishart #scottishartist
The Flower Growers Garden - oil on canvas 12” x 10” painted wet on wet today. My daughter, Catherine runs Cloudberry Flowers and her efforts are providing the inspiration for a series of four flower paintings. #scottishborders #scotlandsmagazine #oilpainting #flowerpainting #scottishart #scottishartist #peebles #peeblesshire #art #cloudberryflowers
Rosie’s 2nd day - Rosie settles in well and during the first day never looked back. She was so good and never missed her brothers and sisters. Even the crate held no fears for her. I guess the start of house training went as well as could be expected. Some success and a couple of failures. She missed her company during the night though and we got maybe four hours sleep. Although she seems to be getting the idea that no one comes when she cries but they may do if she’s quiet. It’s nice to have a dog again! #scottishartist #dogs #labradorretriever #labrador #scotlandsmagazine #scottishborders #peebles

I am exhibiting these 6 works at the Truth and Fiction Exhibition at “The Gallery, Chambers Institution, High Street, Peebles, EH45 8AG” from Saturday 6 April to Saturday 18 May 2019. Many of my artist friends are also exhibiting, so if you’re around Peebles at that time why not drop in and see our work. #peeblesshire #peebles #art #artist #scottishborders #oilpainting #scottishart #scottishartist #scotlandsmagazine

Muckrach Castle - oil on canvas 20” x 24” We hired this castle a few years back for a special birthday. It was 5* and remarkably good value. We loved it: the big wood fire in the baronial Hall, the turnpike stair to the first class bedrooms and it’s location is near Aviemore. #art #scottishart #scottishartist #scottishborders #peebles #scottishcastles #castle #oilpainting #painting #muckrachcastle #scotlandsmagazine

A “Brides Cog” Our family has strong Orkney connections and many guests at our children’s weddings were Orkney friends or relatives. A Brides Cog is a Loving cup to be filled with a strong hot alcoholic brew that is passed around the wedding guests by the bride and groom. I decided to make the Cog myself and the one shown was my third, made for a nephew’s wedding. Perhaps there will be one or two more yet? #scottishartist #peebles #scottishborders #scotlandsmagazine #art #orkney #bridescog #scottishbordersart #woodwork #woodart
Autumn Leaves - Leaf print A4 Not a medium that I have much experience of. However, I was pleased at how this turned out, it captures the colours of autumn pretty well. #art #artist #scottishborders #autumnleaves #leafprint #scotlandsmagazine #peebles #scottishart
Eynhallow Orkney - oil on canvas 30” x 20”. I love Orkney, the colours are stunning and the ever present sea changes aspect constantly.
