Cloth shopping bags are an excellent alternative to the #plasticbags
that people tend to use for their shopping and takeaway lunches. This one was made from an old duvet cover by my sister 2 years ago. Since she gave it to me, I’ve made quite a few others and given them to family and friends to help them live in a more eco-conscious manner.
It doesn’t necessarily need to be a handmade cloth bag of course; any small bag does the trick (like the ones you get with a new pair of shoes, a wallet and/or some fancy cosmetics, for example). At the start, it can be a bit difficult to remember to always bring the bags with you. But, once you get into the habit, the only thing you have to worry about is the occasional look of confusion you get from shopkeepers when you present them with your little bags and explain that you’re really keen not to create more #waste
when there is a really simple way to avoid doing so.
Thankfully, that attitude of confusion seems to be starting to change. The other day, the lady in the shop actually said, ‘Oh it is so nice to see you using those. Just like back in the old days…’ Isn’t it funny that the time before plastic now feels like the old days?
Those old days really weren’t that long ago – and they lasted a lot longer than the #plastic
age, because things were designed to last and be #reused
, not used one and then chucked away.
Maybe it’s about time we made the move back to the old days… shall we?
