Zion Williamson has the potential to be the next big thing in the NBA. At 6’7, 280 pounds, with the explosiveness of a forward and agility of a guard. He should be head and shoulders above everyone in the 2019 NBA Draft including his teammates RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish.
If I were Rob Pelinka (Lakers GM), I would trade away the fodder (Ingram, Ball, KCP, and Beasley) for whomever lands the first pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
On a long-term basis Ingram shows potential, but if you get AD or KD it’s filler. Ball, who is showing flashes to be a great point guard, will continue to be hindered with LeBron’s way of playing. KCP is a role player at best, as well as Beasley. Financially, those players reach the end of their rookie scale contracts at different intervals. They most likely will want a hefty contract. Thus, with the Lakers wanting to shell out max contracts to stars, it doesn’t make sense to give above-average role players (if they don’t fully pan out) top dollar in the future. It also creates a mess that LA doesn’t need if they want to compete for championships.
By trading those players away, you free some cap space, and as opposed to paying four rookie-scale contracts (Hart included), you would only have to pay three in Williamson, Hart and Kuzma. Plus, with the money for big name free agents, you make a push for KD, AD, or Kawhi.
Thus, you have a future center-piece in Zion, a young stud in either KD/AD/Kawhi and LeBron who can give you two-three years left of dominance.
Plus.....imagine that fastbreak with Zion, Lebron, and AD/KD/Kawhi in purple and gold. #Showtime
