Forrester Pass | A year ago i was trudging thru the High Sierra, a very formative experience. Day 2 in the sierra i got caught up one night in an early snow storm. my tent flooded and i was completely soaked. my sleeping bag was wet. my puffy, my melly and even my shirt soaked thru. it was below 25 degrees that night and shit went downhill fast. i wasn’t sure what to do. i thought about jumping into the river next to my tent to warm up, but for whatever reason i didn’t. i would’ve died if i got in the river for certain. swept away and drowned in freezing torrents. the confusion that entailed can’t really be summarized but jumping into a freezing cold river in the middle of the night completes that point. i couldn’t think straight but i knew if i let myself close my eyes i would’ve died. i’m happy i stayed awake that night. .
i mentally checked out after this hypothermic incident. my fingers, toes and nose lost feeling for 10+ days. life seemed delusional during this time. i made mistakes that i really regret. like not having socks for this stretch. it was stupid and i should get scrutiny. but here i am, so i’ll scrutinize those instead, before they make my mistakes. i crushed the sierra though, fearing another snow storm or the end of my thru hike. i did 30-38 miles a day, minimal 2 passes a day, from 4 am to 9 pm. that is until i made it to Kennedy Meadows. i reminisce back on this time with a great deal of respect for the Sierra, because when you don’t, they will kill you. and if you do respect them, they will still try.

Remembering that time @lilianahallman
packed out NOT ONLY 10 days of food, BUT S’MORES! And hauled it over Forester Pass (tallest point on the PCT). After a grueling day of post-holing and mental struggle, we all gathered around the campfire and shared laughs and pride in our wonderfully challenging day. .

Groovy finds on county lines 🦋🌈✨
Also why hasn’t a lava lamp emoji been created yet? 🙄

You do not need to schedule your hours, you need to schedule your attention. It is your energy, not your time, that is limited each day.
Right outside Sequoia NP lies a hidden gem, they said. So I went and found it!
My absolute favorite beer is back after like 5 years+ being off the market. Sierra Neveda is from my hometown and when I feel homesick for cali it brings back all the feels. Especially Ruthless 😭🤤😛
Leave only footprints. (In an effort to get my mom back to the high sierras, my son and I introduced her to a favorite beautiful spot (which one may reach by car) at 10,000 ft.. (Can you name it?)
Since she can’t camp or backpack anymore, this is a goldmine - especially for someone like her!
We stopped to enjoy the beauty and, astoundingly, ended up doing a beach clean-up. On this gorgeous beach, trash and fishing line had been left for others to clean up. I was sad to see that there are some people who benefit by reaching such an elevation by car, only to dismiss the pristine environment and leave behind the problems that such ease of access might present.
My father taught us well when he said,”Leave a campsite (or anywhere) cleaner than you found it.” Thank you, Dad!
Leave only footprints.
(I realize that those of us who hike or follow nature photography do this, so any ideas for how to encourage “leaving only footprints” with those who leave behind their trash, please share. Maybe more signs serving as (obvious) reminders?)

Moonlight on Tahoe. Imagine one hundred years ago, one thousand years ago! Imagine one hundred years from now....the moon everlasting. One can hope. Im not sure people can preserve what nature intends. I do know people can destroy it. #sierraneveda #mountains #water #peace #knowbetterdobetter
Reading from one of my favorite books always gets me excited to get back into the mountainside a backpacking / fly fishing trip. I will be in the John Muir Wilderness , Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, The Golden Trout Wilderness and Inyo National Forrest all in the same day!!!! If you haven’t read this amazing book you should. I’m reading it for the 3rd time and I’m sure I will read it again. #sierraneveda #flyfish
