It might not be very "macho" or "cowboy" (or "cowgirl"!) to care for your animal... Personally I don't care for people who have that opinion. A horse you've chosen to take on deserves the world for what they will do for their human, whatever the discipline, because they don't get to make that choice (or almost any other choice) for themselves.
When we take a horse on we MUST recognise that this living breathing creature might: ▪choose to display its feelings in a "negative" way
▪not be a good fit for us as the human or our chosen discipline
▪get sick and need expensive veterinary care
▪get sick and need early retirement
▪reflect back to us parts of ourselves we would rather not spend time working to improve
▪need extra time and attention even tho we ourselves are feeling exhausted
▪live for 30+ years
▪need us in the middle of the night
▪need us to make difficult decisions
▪need us to learn more about ourselves before they will oblige us
▪display behaviours they've learnt from us, that we must correct in ourselves before we can correct them
▪need time off, which means missing the big show or work
Your horse will DEFINITELY need you to be understanding, congruent, honest, truthful, hard working, willing, appreciative, kind, and many more qualities that the world needs more of. Don't worry about being macho or cowboy/girl, or what others are doing with their horse, or what they think when they look at you and your horse. Yes this is easier said than done, but if you can stop judging others and their animals, maybe someday someone will return you the favour, and a brilliant chain reaction will begin where we can all appreciate our horses without worry.
Besides, why wouldn't you want to make your horse make silly faces when you find that favourite itchy spot?
