Who here has had an easy entrepreneurial ride? Raise your hand! 🖐🏼 Not me, and my guess is not you... In fact, I’ve heard it said on many occasions that entrepreneurnism is one of THE most challenging things you can choose to do.
Last week, on my stories, I highlighted an interview in which Tiffany Haddish said she kept all her pay stubs in photo albums so she can reflect on how far she’s come—especially when she’s feeling like she hasn’t accomplished much. I don’t keep pay stubs, but I do look at yearly Income & Expense reports every now and then... you know why? Because I ALWAYS see the progression in those. Not necessarily linear progression every year, but always a progressive story.
Most think they’ll hit 6 or 7 figures relatively fast. Stats say otherwise. Personally, I think money is only a piece of what matters as an entrepreneur. My view? #1
, there’s passion. #2
, there’s autonomy + creative control. #3
, there’s money. Over the years I’ve consciously course-corrected a few times to keep #1
in alignment as highest priorities—and in those years I didn’t hit 6-figures like the year prior... I don’t share this to brag in any form. ✨
I’m sharing this because most entrepreneurs and small business owners have years of financial ups and downs—even those that have really “made it.” It’s a disservice to suggest that everything financially related goes up each year. Sometimes things are beyond your control, sometimes you have a baby, sometimes there’s grievous health issues, sometimes the consumer market has shifted... .
I’m also sharing this because there is SO MUCH emphasis on making 6 and 7 figures without accounting for the heart. I think a holistic view is much more needed. (And it’s also a reason I put a lot more emphasis on things like tax deductions, financial clarity + security.) To live a satisfied life you DON’T have to be rich, but you do need some financial savvy—especially when you’re calling the shots and holding the responsibility as business owner. ✨
If you’re willing, I’d love to hear if this resonates with you... and how you personally chart your own entrepreneurial journey below.
