Alright. Oh gosh. I’m doing a thing. One of those hashtag love yourself posts. Sorry in advance.
I don’t normally post about my body or the effect my decently-active lifestyle has on my self-perception and life in general. Makes me uncomfortable, like I’m not supposed to be or something. But given that I’m probably not going to again for another 2-3 years, I figure I can take tonight as an exception.
I started exercising in earnest around senior year of high school. Started with running, then decided I liked lifting things up and putting them down, too. Five years later, here’s where I’m at. I’m just starting to shed the traditional Winter Layer. It grew a little more this season than in years past, many thanks to Sunday River’s brownies and Holy Donut, which are literally baked with potatoes (they’re so delicious @holydonut
GIVE ME FREE DONUTS THANKS). Still, I’m a far cry from when I could wrap two fingers around my bicep.
I’m not a bodybuilder. I don’t calorie count. Power to those who do, but it just doesn’t feel like my thing. I’m still lazy at heart, I guess. But I’m part of two great running groups and sometimes I can even convince myself to get out of bed for a morning run. I go on hikes again in the summers and ski as much as I can when it drops below 32. I’m fortunate enough to have a job that lets me both bike AND ski at ludicrously reasonable rates, and I need far less convincing overall to get outside than I did when I was a kid.
The fact remains that even these things, just casual fitness with even a tinge of general regularity, can have a huge impact on your physical health and your mental, too. You don’t HAVE to calorie count or run sprints 5 times a week. Steamed vegetables and more water and just some regular walking will do the trick, too. Or making it a point to always get 8 hours sleep and drink beer less. What matters is that you do it for you, and you feel better about yourself through doing it. I can almost guarantee that you will. From there, it’ll snowball.
