BE UNCONVENTIONAL! A full 12 months now of adding these heavily in to my programming for athletes, coming away from conventional thinking.....aaaaand what do you know?! Coming away from weightlifting movements & back squatting for my contact sport clients, as testing has shown, more power, strength &agility 💁🏼♂️plus not a game missed this season. Primary job of an S&C coach for an athlete is to improve •Movability & Availability. Job done 😊 #Repost @rick__cooper
Hugging bags isn’t what I always do.....but when I do 😉
Odd/awkward object training has recently been a 💡moment to personal knowledge, Particularly in any plane of squat.
Injuries to hips, knees, lower backs, chest, shoulder all from standard back squatting & of course impact on my athletes in their given sport, got me thinking....when do we ever posterior load?🤔 I mean, where is the NEED to put a bar on your back, steadily walkout (backwards!), stabilise your feet, ankles, hips and squat down in a controlled manor?
Very rarely is this the case for a physical orientated athlete or any of us every day.
This Led me to look at all the awkward angles my rugby, combat sports, my builders, housewife clients have to undertake.
Awkward object frontal plane loading is pretty much the only plane we ever load in, be it picking up a child/the shopping, labouring, tackling, fighting etc so has a huge transfer to not only my clients sports but for every day life & being more useful generally.
The instability of it, forces the ankles, hips, knees in to stabilisation, a more upright body position engages more core (back protection) triggering reaction from our ‘power’ muscles (posterior chain- hams, glutes, back), to generate force through to anterior plane, firing quads in the process.
With so much switched on, the body & joints are now physically prepared to move, loaded, in a variety of directions, instead of a general A to B with equal load across the shoulders. Leading to us just generally being better at everyday life as well as athletic endeavours.
