Johnny Clegg & Savuka - Cruel, crazy, beautiful world
Everybody has their favourite when it comes to band and musicians. Well I can unequivocally state that this is mine. Through the years I have always loved the output of Juluka and Johnny’s later work with Savuka, and there were always numerous highlights spread over multiple albums, but from the first minute I heard this I was hooked. You only need to listen to Dela (I know why the dog howls at the moon) to understand the depth and complexity of what Johnny was trying to say. Imagine a country that has seeped itself into your deepest consciousness, been everything you’ve ever known, lived in and experienced, its high and low points your learning school, and raising your own son in it? The front cover depicts Johnny with his son, Jesse, on his shoulders (the title track is dedicated to his son). The content of the songs is overtly political but in an understated and mellow yet clear manner, the messages preferring to make you reflect and act rather than incite anger. Savuka, translated, means “we have arisen”. Nowhere is this as poetic as on this album - stand your ground in a noble manner, believe in your principles, and don’t be afraid to act upon them. EMI, 1989.
