Standing, looking for a stranger who could help her climb those steps. To catch her office cab. To live her day.
Everyday was an interesting experience. Some people would smile, some stare, some wonder, some walk away.
She would smile mostly. Make small conversation, "What is your name? Where do you work? Where do you stay?". Normalize the feeling. The feeling that she had to take help. That she was less. Unequal. Different. Disabled.
That day was yet another day. She looked around. Whose turn was it today? She wondered, looking around.
And he came by. Refused to hold her hand. Refused to help her down those steps. Instead, urged her gently to try herself.
I am there, he said. Try- I will be there if you fall.
And she did. And she felt able. And he stood by her- not for that day, that month, that year but for years to come.
