Spray and pray is not a #strategy
, and it's disturbing how many blogs complain that MOST publicists just blast their contact lists with random, and often inappropriate, pitches. 🤦🤦🗣️ #makeitstop
Being visible takes time and strategy. You have to know where your audience hangs out (from social media to magazines and blogs), curate custom contact lists (from op-ed emails to individual journalists), create bold branded content (something unique to you that is memorable), and be patient with the process (be consistent and wait). Going off the rails, putting yourself in front of whoever you can find and expecting them to respond the way you want them to is ineffective and self defeating. You have to strike the balance between being unapologetically yourself and producing content people respond to. And in the end, there's no guarantee your audience will buy what you're selling, so #checkyourego
at the door.
On the flip side, if you go where your audience is, provide a valuable and unique perspective, and don't expect instant fame with a verified check in 48 hours, you might just get somewhere. It's about #adaptation
, and #perseverance
. It's about being yourself, making a connection, and gambling with your truth.
It takes time, but you'll get there. Stop letting people sell you impossible dreams and get real with yourself, your message, your audience, and your approach.
