Reading, writing and planning.
So, someone tells us to go to school, and then we will be smart.
Someone else tell us go to college, and then we will make money (enough to pay back our loans at least 😂- jokes 😑).
Someone tells us pick one life path and stay there... but is that the path that will make you happy? How will you know if you’ve never tried? What if you try it and you hate it?
That’s my story. I spent years getting several degrees and my passion for educating people became a miserable experience, not because I didn’t love what I was doing, or because I disliked working with people, but because of the systems/politics within academics that were impenetrable. Then, I saw my true loves- music and writing- becoming distant beings, like old friends that I wanted so desperately to remain in my life, but were too busy hanging out with other newer friends. I had to choose the path that didn’t make sense for anyone else, and in doing so, each day, I find that I need to be authentic, not just to others, but to myself primarily- because it matters to listen to your soul’s cry. It matters to love what you do. It matters to choose joy over being practical.
Now I’m not saying quit your day job immediately to follow your dreams, because once you make the decision, things don’t get easier... but I will tell you this: The more you choose you, you start to become proud of yourself for knowing your worth every time. Things don’t always start to fall into place, and you may fuck up along the way, but as long as you can look back and say “hey, I did that shit”, that’s alllll that matters. It’s better than carrying a hole in your heart from dreams deferred...
And by sharing this, I’ve just shed another layer I would have “traditionally” kept locked away- deep inside.
